Dog eating rocks (stones) ???

how about a tire tied to a rope for him to pull at?(as long as you teach him that only tires are to be pulled, and not poeople or things that are meant for people. also, teach him the take, and the leave it... commands... imperative. its really easy to teach.. even with nero, who had been half trained for attack and grab methods. we had to untrain him. he knew to grab, but not the 'drop it'; or leave it...hotdogs chopped in to teenie weenie pieces worked really well for the drop it command, as did peanut butter /mollasses cookie pieces...
catch it while u can... with that size dog, getting him to 'leave it' will be difficult later on when u need it. its also a fun command to do... teaching with many objects, teach: take the dolly. take the keys, take the shoe (or whatever toys or objects u want him to take (newspaper, sock laundry bag, keys dropped on the floor, whatever), games games games...

Annie my golden retriever used to chew on rocks.. she would come in the house will a rock and you would never know, it was tucked away in her mouth. Sometimes she would chew them, and we would have a big mess to clean up. Sometimes she would stach them away, weeks later we would find a rock pile of 20-30 rocks. When we found them, she moved them!

Think thats bad? We used to have a cat who was a pro at catching birds. she would pop those suckers in her mouth and walk right on in the house. We couldnt tell because, like annie, she had them hidden in her mouth. She wouldnt kill them though, they went completely unharmed. and the minute she stepped inside she would let them loose.

Just sitting there, watching it flying all around the house and us trying to catch it...

Thanks, those are good ideas, he is good at dropping stuff ..sometimes... but you're right probably just need to hammer it in better.

Hahaha I had a laugh at that story! That's crazy! I can't believe she'd just delicately bring them inside and then let them loose. Too funny!

My one and a half year old mastiff keeps chewing on rocks and pebbles he finds in the yard! The land out here is pretty rocky so there's no way I can get rid of all the rocks, I just have to babysit him every time I let him out. Has anyone else ever had this problem??? Any ideas or speculations as to why he does this? I'm at a loss!

Hi There!
It could be a lot of things why he's chewing food. According to this article: goldenretrieverlove.com/why-is-my-puppy-eating-rocks-what-can-i-do-about-it/, it could be behavioral or medical in nature. You should observe your mastiff for any symptoms of anemia or stomach problems (loss of appetite). It could also be that he has a lot of energy stored and needs more play time and attention.
