Dog eats chicken poop! Yuck!

A chickens "system" is very fast acting. ie; if a chicken eats 5 lbs of food, it'll poop out 3.5-4 lbs, undigested. Remember when Oprah was sued by western beef producers, because she exposed the FACT that they fed thier beef,,,,,,,,,,,,,chicken poop, mixed with ground up cardboard, and molasses??? Oprah won,,,,,,,,,

Best advice I've heard in a while.

Our new pup is an indoor dog. When I take him out around the chickens he is leashed at all times.
Nevertheless, the chickens visit our fenced yard during the day and the pup has a late night snack on what they leave behind.

We were at the vet for something totally unrelated, but I mentioned the chicken situation to the vet. That's when she suggested taking the fecal sample and we found out she was infected. We've treated her since and her last sample came back clean. And now they are totally separated at all times. There's no way I can keep her from eating the chicken poop in the free range area, so she can't go in there. I was very lucky.

Hi, Cody has not had any symptoms like that, thank god! I love him very much and would also take him to the vet asap were he to stop eating, or anything else, I can assure you that. Heck, I am making an appointment for him first thing Monday anyway to make sure there is nothing going on. This is why I posted this question, not because I think it's funny but because I care and am trying to be responsible and educated about the dangers of keeping chickens and what it means to my existing pets.

Having said that, our dogs are never allowed to be unsupervised with the birds. Occasionally, if the birds are free ranging and their run gate is open so they have access to their food and water, Cody makes his way in there and wala, poop gets eaten.

Thank you for answering my concerns and educating us on what can happen if a dog gets cocci from the chickens. It is appreciated!

I'm new at this and am learning as I go along, too. I had no idea my dog could pick up anything from the chickens, so now I know. I read in another thread that you just can't know everything and keep them perfectly healthy. I figure we all do our best and share our experiences.

My dogs love any kind of poop. They would come running if they knew we were cleaning the guinea pig cage hoping something would drop. We now keep the door closed. I try to keep all the dog poop on the yard cleaned up and keep the area around the coop cleaned as well as discouraging them from eating any snacks they may find. Easier said than done. One will drop it when told and another will run with his prized possesion like his life depends on it. As far as your dog eating grass and his stomach being grumbly, have you changed his food or does he /she have a sensitive stomach? I know when my dog's stomach is upset he will run around and eat grass and lots of it to try and make himself sick.
