Dog eats chicken poop! Yuck!

Ok I have to stop reading this. My boss must think I'm losing it because I keep laughing at my desk. My dog loves chicken poop too. She waits for the chickies to move out of an area and then runs over to look for treats. I love the visual of the Pomeranian with the warpaint!

As with everyone else, my dog loooooves chicken poop. Two weeks ago my chickens finished treatment for coccidia. Theri fecal samples came back free and clear. This week I took my dog to the vet for vaccines. I mentioned chickens, and how she like to eat the poop. The vet suggested a fecal sample. My dog is healthy, no symptoms of anything. I had no fear. Then....the results not only came back positive, but she had TONS of parasites. Eeewww. Now she's been treated and still her same ol' self. But it really shocked me to find out she had coccidia as well. I thought it was host specific. They explained that there are strains that are, but also some that are cross species. Who woulda thought?

I agree it's gross to watch my dogs eat the chicken nuggets. However, I must say that the worst part is the chicken poop farts! My dog now sleeps in the other room!

The risk of cocci is not worth letting a dog continue to eat the poop. If you've ever seen a dog DIE from cocci, you'd understand why it upsets me. The vomiting, and pooping of BLOOD, and the smell. I'll never forget it.

And NO it was NOT one of my dogs. I'd have taken my dog to the vet at the first sign of vomiting, or pooping blood, or refusing to eat. However, the mother dog, and a whole litter of puppies DID DIE from cocci!!

Please try to keep the dogs and chickens separated. Not only because of the cocci, but because of the risk of the dog killing the chickens. Say it won't happen? Read the predator thread on this forum at how many other dog owners thought the same thing.

Let's try to keep both our poultry and our dogs in a safe environment.

We have them seperated. And the dog isn't allowed in the chicken area. Ever. I watched my dog as I raised my chicks. She knew the rules while they were in the brooder. When they went outside, she didn't pay any attention to them. Knowing she's a prey driven dog, I had her with me, away from the chickens and watched. She would just stare at them, then all of a sudden it was like a switch was flipped and her brain said, "CHICKENS! Those things are CHICKENS!!!!! I want those CHICKENS!" I knew it would happen, so was prepared. (And the chickens were fenced off.) But it doesn't matter how well a dog is trained. They are what they are. I agree. Keep them separated. Eventhough mine didn't have the symptoms of cocci, I'm very grateful to the vet for suggesting the test. It was enough for me to keep her away. And I was lucky enough to get her treated.
