Dog grabbed our duck and her leg is broken!

Thank you! I took the splint off today. The bone seems to be healed but her leg is wonky and she can't walk......We first removed the splint and put her in water and she really enjoyed it. Swam around, moving her leg, drinking, eating peas,,,acting like a duck! But out of the water she can't walk. I'm assuming that it will take a while to get her leg back in order from in being in a splint! She is back in the cage. I plan on keeping her there for a couple more weeks and letting her swim in the bath daily(or every other day). I'm hopeful, but still I have a question!!!

If it comes to it and I have to put her down what is the best way other than taking her to the vet? I know that I won't be able to do it myself, but I think my dad will be able to if he has to! I am not giving up on her yet, but I want to be prepared in case her leg doesn't heal! I did a search on the forum and found some info for chickens, but not ducks! Would it be the same?

Thank you so much

Susan

I don't know how to euthanize, but wanted to congratulate you, urge patience, and suggest you find some comfrey - it's an herb, and is said to help bones heal.

You could make a tea, let it cool, and soak a rag in it and wrap the leg or even put some into the bath water.

I don't think she is going to be able to walk again! I asked this before and I need to ask it again, but what is the best way to put a duck down? I haven't given up yet, but I don't want to prolong suffering and if she can't walk I will have to put her down! Please give me some advice! Thank you!

Please don't euthanize her. 2 weeks is not long enough to repair a broken bone. 4 to 6 weeks is the minimum but 6 to 8 weeks is more realistic. Can she walk with the splint on ? If she can then it can be left on for 4 to 6 weeks . Take it off intermittently to allow her to swim and let her skin breathe. Once the leg is looking stronger she can then downgrade from a splint to a support dressing for a further couple of weeks. I recently had a goose with tendon problems that couldn't walk and she needed 4 weeks of support dressings but is now doing well . ( I am a vet nurse also)

X2.

The splint has been OFF for almost 2 weeks! It was on for almost 2 weeks! I had no idea how long to leave it on (I asked and very few people responded), and the advice I got was to leave it on for 2 weeks, so that is what I did! She can not walk at all.....The leg that was hurt stays out from her body, she can't even put it under her body! When we put her in the bath tub, it is still out from her body but she can move it from the top part of her leg in the water... I don't want to euthanize her, and I haven't....but I don't know what to do if she doesn't heal up! When we put her on the floor she falls over if she tries to move! The one leg stays under her(but she can't stand on it alone) and the other leg is out from her body! I'm still putting her in water daily, but if she doesn't get better what other choice do I have?????
