Dog hanging around coop in the middle of the night

Late last night, my son saw a dog - looked like a lab, not a wolf or coyote - come out of the woods, sniff around the coop, and then give up and go back into the woods. Could that be what's been getting my chickens?? I've never seen a dog around at all. We've reinforced the door since our last incident. So far so good!

It could certainly be your culprit. Is the dog feral? It may be trying to feed itself and possibly some pups. Pity. If it is your culprit then it will likely keep returning.

It could be the one. It is sad when this happens. We had a dog kill 12 of my hens in Oct. I would be very careful so you don't lose anymore. I hope everything works out for the best.

If you can I would get a lg dog trap and take it to a local shelter. Otherwise you may have to resort to lead poisoning.

It will be back until it gets what it wants. An electric fence around the coop will break him.

Sprinkle flour around the coop on a night that will be calm as far as wind and no rain in the forecast. In the morning you can tell by the prints what animal/animals have been lurking around.
