dog kennels (runs)

I used the panels on the top as well to make everything predatorproof and wrapped the the bottom half with hardware cloth, the upper half and roof with chicken wire and laid a skirt around the perimeter of galvinized garden wire that I just slid underneath. It has worked out well. When I got more chickens (shockeroo) it was easy to add-on.

That's what I am using. Ditto all of the predator-proof suggestions above. I like the fact that if it's strong to keep IN a dog, it's strong enough to keep OUT a dog. You see, the biggest threat to my birds is one of MY DOGS!! She is only 50 pounds, but has become such a hunter/killer (of rabbits, mice, moles--she LOVES and licks our 4 cats)--that I have to watch her around the birds. She's influencing my other dog (63 pounds and 1/2 year younger) to do the same.

LOVE the dog kennel run. Mine is a heavy-duty one I paid to have installed at the same time I had my 4 acres fenced but no longer used it, so took it apart and moved it in sections over to my horsestall turned chicken coop. I had one 6' x 12' panel extra so I put that on top over their log roost and covered it with a tarp for shade and to keep the rain off but need to put tin or that plastic stuff instead because we get a lot of rain in the Pacific NW and the tarp holds the water.

I put deer netting over the rest to keep the hawks and bald eagles out. Last weekend I had three bald eagles flying overhead. When there's just one or a red tail hawk the crows will gang up and chase them off, but not a crow insight with the three.

Since this photo was taken, I've added hardware cloth to the bottom 2 1/2 ft that aprons out.

I use one though I tried to put a tarp over it in the summer so they would have shade and we had a storm one night it blew over our shed and into the neighbor's yard 5 acres away, I had to take it all apart and bend it back in shape and put it back together. I just suggest staking it down if you decide to put a tarp on it.

this is what I plan to do as well. I just had the 10' x 10' x 6H run delivered today. I am looking for pics/advice on how to predatorproof it, but still be able to get in. I will learn from OrchidChick and not put up an unsupported tarp. Thanks for the topic!

i put together a small section only 6 x 6 for my babies to use while the coop is being built. we take thme out during the day and back in later in the evening. I used chicken wire to cover the top and the bottom 2 feet or so becasue at first they kept stepping in and out of the run. I may use the dog run for the coop while I build the permanant run for the girls.
