dog killed a bunch of my chickens

chickamauga man,

the person who should feel bad is the owner of the dog. you did what you had to do, and probably saved many other animals' from being killed as a result. you have nothing to feel bad about. the owner of the dog should be ashamed of himself for disrespecting his neighbor's property in such a manner, and putting you in that position in the first place.

The absolute worst part of pulling the trigger is when you don't get a clean kill and the dog leaves yelping and running funny. Toward his house. : ( anticipation of what will come only makes it worse.

I am surprised while reading some laws. According to one law, a person with moderate to severe mental retardation doesn't deserve death penalty. Surprisingly, it is legal to kill dogs who are significantly less intelligent than retarded humans if they are wounding or killing livestock. Dogs can't understand why it is wrong to kill a human being livestock. IMO, it is the dog owner's fault and the dog doesn't deserve death. It is possible that the dog owner doesn't really want it's dog to kill the chickens since he/she doesn't know the effective solution to the problem. My mom chains her dog(she damages footwear and wants to kill cats and chickens), and sometimes she gets off the chain. Since she gets off the chain a lot, I realized that it is not an effective solution. I really don't want her to be chained, but my mom would rather use her money to buy what she doesn't need instead of using it to buy fence. However, the dog owner should pay for the damages, since it is his/her responsibility to prevent the dog from causing problems to it's neighbor, once he/she owns the dog.

It would be nice if the dog owner will implement an effective solution to the problem, or pay you for the amount you used to effectively prevent his/her dog from killing your chickens along with the damages the dog inflict on the chickens.
