dog mange?

Ok my sister's dog is around 7 and when she was about 6 months old im guessing, she got mange. We have treated her and treated her and treated her, she's been on meds her whole life, but she just can not shake it. We don't have the money to do constant vet visits and meds anymore. Does anyone deal with this? What do yall do to help keep the mange at bay? She eats as much as our german shephared and our german shephared is a little over weight, but she is really skinny. Just want to help her out more

I'm assuming you've recently had her scraped and tested for mange and that test result came back demodectic vs. sarcoptic mange? Have you had a blood panel done on her that includes having her thyroid checked?

We've had success treating some of the rescue puppies that have come it with demodectic mange using the hydrogen peroxide/Borax (20 Mule Team Borax (not Boric Acid)) method. You can find the recipe online.

She has been in and out of the vets with testing medication and dips. If I remember correctly she has demodex mange. None of the other dogs got it not even her sister, but I think she has a weak immune system causing it to be difficult to fight it off. I'm kind of afraid to use peroxide as not only does it kill the bad, but also kills the good.

Demodex is often present in pups born to very young bitches. It can be difficult to treat and may be stress related. It is certainly related to a weak immune system. We had a litter of pups that were badly affected. Now, they are 5 years old and only 2 of the 6 show any remaining signs. one has a very small bald patch at the root of his tail, and the other periodically has thinning coat but it thickens up again. We treatd it with a spot on medicine from the vet which had to be applied about every 6 weeks so wasn't too expensive. If your dog has any sheep herding gene, and I believe yours does, do not use any dips like Mitaban. These can be fatal for dogs of this type. Stick to the spot on type of medicines.

IF your dog can properly process it (some herding dogs can't there is a blood test to check for sure) ivermectin given daily for 4 weeks kills off mange mites very effectively. Ask your vet for options and explain your financial concerns most will work with you.

If it is demodetic you should have only had to treat it once since it is transferred from milk I believe meaning it shouldn't come back to an adult/weaned dog. I would be worried her immune system is weak if it is returning.

You can enquire about advantage multi. It is often used to treat demodectic mange, especially if she's been on ivermectin her whole life, the bugs appear to be immune to it.
It is not spread through breast milk, that is how it is believed round worms are transmitted to nursing puppies though
