dog nail clipping

You know...

If I were you, I would take him to the groomer to get the nails done for the first time. See if they can teach you exactly how to clip his nails in a calm way that won't make him nervous or fidgety (which could cause you to nick the quick) and cause him to not allow you to clip again...

Just my opinion.

i love dremel! so do the dogs!

Johnn, you're getting good advise. Just read what people are posting. If your not sure, have someone help you in person.

Look at your dogs nail anatomy, Ukiah posted a great picture. If you cut the pink part of the nail, it will cause your dog alot of pain (and bleeding) and will make it harder in the future to keep his nails trimmed properly. Trim to before the pink of the quick, give it time to receed after the dog walks on it etc... Trim again in a few days, a little at a time.

Human nail clippers are made to trim flat nails like ours, not rounded ones, with a fleshy core like a dogs. Use the right tool for the right job!

My friend is lending me there dog nail clippers and are going to help me do it because they no how to

all I can say if if you quik the dog and it freaks out don't be one of those people who takes their dog to the groomer after you hurt it. I'm a groomer and quite frankly it drives me crazy when people expect us to be able to clip their dogs nails after they have hurt it. Save your self some money and time take it to the groomer now rather than trying it yourself and injuring the dog like another poster said many grooming places will be happy to show you how to clip your dogs nails. Dogs can get so emotionally scarred over nail clipping that you will have to pay a vet to sedate and clip the nails if they are too bad.

Ugh...Pogo used to have to be sedated to clip his nails. And clip him.

Just to prevent that from happening, might go ahead and start clipping the puppy's nails today!!!
