dog nail clipping

Get the dog nail clippers and get some quick stop powder to stop the bleeding if you get one too short.
If you get one to short and it bleeds it is not the end of the world even though your dog will make you think it is.

Dogs can be drama queens about their nails. Just be firm and quick.

If you are afraid to clip his nails, like the poster above said - take him to a groomer. Dogs sense what
we are feeling, and if you feel fearful, he will pick up on it and be un-easy. If he's hyper, take him on a
long walk before attempting to clip his nails so that he will be pooped and not jerky and spastic. Have
a good pair of nail clippers, flour or quick stop & a treat for afterwards. Look at the nail, and you'll see
a pink inside outlined by the clear nail. You want to clip above the pink as it is the quick of the nail and
will bleed an amazing amount of blood if nipped. If this is the first time his nails have been clipped, start
by clipping the VERY tip of the nail, then clipping of a bit more every other day until they are the length
they need to be. (Nails shouldn't be 'click click clicking' on hard floors, or snagging on carpet) The reason
for the short clipping every other day is so that the quick of the nail will gradually move down the more
you clip. Once you finish each clipping, reward him with a good dog treat. if the quick is accidently nipped,
apply flour or quick stop to make it clot. Don't freak, it'll be alot of blood but your dog will be fine. Also, you
need either a dremel as mentioned above or good dog nail clippers. Human nail clippers could crack the nail
if your clipping off large amounts, which isn't good.

The ends are what your supposed to clip off, but just clipping a crumb of nail off and leaving it as is wont solve
the problem. You need to clip a bit off every other day or so until the nails are the length they need to be.

The chart posted above is great. Go by that and then to help with sharp edges just use a emery board to round them off once you have clipped them. A groomer and many vets would do it for you or a knowledgeable friend. I do lots of friends dogs also ppl will bring their dog into where I work to get them done. I would recommend clipping his nails every week or two to keep them manageable. If they are overly long now tho please be careful as the quick may have grown out longer then it should be...

On a really little dog, you an use people toe nail clippers. I've done it. Since your dog's nails are clear, then you can see where the vein (quick) is, so you can just nip off the end. I have one dog I can clip, and one who I can't because she's got black nails...I don't want to risk it, so I take her to the groomer who does it for just five dollars.
