Dog needs to throw up but won't Hurry! *all set now*

Just a comment from a vet tech--be very cautious with dogs that are acting like they are trying to vomit but can't--this is often a symptom of bloat or in the worst case GVD. This is more common in bigger dogs (labs, rotts, dobies, goldens, mastifs, etc.). This is very serious--this is why the person on the phone kept trying to get you to come in. In the case of a GVD, your dog can die within a half hour!!! (has to do with blood flow, toxins, stomach bursting, etc.).

But--I am very glad your dog is okay.

Hello, just logged on...and word of advice, Im a medic.....when a person, child or animal something in there throat...people tend to put a finger in there and do a sweep with the finger to dislodge the item....if its not done right....YOU MAKE IT WORSE BY PUSHING THE ITEM DEEPER INTO THE TRACH (WINDPIPE).....

ITS BEST TO GET BEHIND THEM AND DO A POINT THEM FACE DOWN...FACING TO THE GROUND, AND HIT THE MIDDLE OF THE BACK A FEW TIMES, KIND OF HARD BUT NOT TO BREAK THEM....this brings out the item forward into the mouth area.

Hope this helps.....take care!!!!

I feel bad now for trying it. I was always told to do that because of the gag reflex. And bantamsrus, He's only a five month old Maltese. Do you think he is likely to have bloat or GVD? I know he has a history of eating everything, and he did throw up and is happy again.

Bloat was my first thought as well. Glad that wasn't it.

If it seems like an emergency always call the vet first.

Well Im not an expert on pets...other than me having 7 dogs, 3 cats, and 4 parrots...and now 23 chickens...and waiting on 32 to hatch aug 7th...but I do have human children...and a Medic...dealing with people and 911 emergency calls....

all our teachings show us to not stick a finger in the mouth, use to be that you did, and do what they call a "clean sweep" of the mouth curling finger towards you and trying to dislodge the item...that is old school,...now its what I told you.

Sometimes you do what you have to for it to work....was just FYI for everyone....

Just a note from another vet tech...don't induce vomiting if you don't know what the dog has eaten! Some things can do more damage by coming back up.
Another reason the vet's office probably told you to bring him in.

Glad it worked out for you and wasn't anything more serious!

Be sure to keep an eye on him today. Make sure you tell your parents. They may want to have him checked anyway. If it happens again...I think you should call your parents at work and have them come home. It could be serious. Keep us all posted of his condition! And remember to stay calm.
