Dog Shot For Killing chickens Article

Not domestic violence, unless the dog is deliberately trained to bite the wife, as a way to control the wife. Otherwise it is just that the wife is a co-owner of a biting dog. (I am a domestic violence advocate, so I checked this statement out).

LOL, thank you for clarifing. No, he is not trained to bite my wife. And actually all of the dogs papers are only in my wifes name so she is the owner of a biting dog.......

So my comment was taken way to serious and nobody watched Bones ! Anyway relief

) Am surprised tho that a border would have that kind of control problem. Not wanting to start another off the wall post but would there be a reason that he does not see you as leader of the pack ?? because that makes your wife #3 and would explain his behavior.??

Just wanted to give you support for being responsible for your dog and to your dog. I also kept a border collie very much like your own. The only plus with him was a better bite inhibition. He led a more protected life, but was a happy dog. He also had multiple levels of security for escaping the yard and I always kept a close eye on him when he was out.

He went for walks, went to the beach to swim, took some agility classes and I could even take him out to stores. But I had to protect him from people rushing up to him and doing something stupid.

Had he ever gotten out and was a threat to anyone or anything I would not have blamed them one bit. I would have been very upsetting to me, that's why I was so careful to keep him from getting out.

I can accept the fact that I did not see the humor in the comment, mostly because I have zero respect for domestic violence offenders and just didn't want to be catagorized as one. But, I now do get your comment and no harm no foul.

For the control issue of the dog. I don't know if you have ever owned or been around a border collie before. They are super super smart. I mean compared to my lab mix and others I have owned, they don't come close to the level of intelligence of my border collie. It is absolutley amazing how smart these dogs are, I mean, you can see them thinking and planning. That being said, they have a mind of their own. My dog knows a ton of tricks and commands. He knows hand signals as well. When he is in the mood to listen and work I have 100% control of him. BUT when he wants to do something contrary to my command, he will and to top it off he knows the correction process that is coming as a result of him not obeying. Case in point, When I train him, he has a pinch collar on. When he does not follow a command the correction is a "NO" followed by an immediate tug on the lead to pinch him. If he "chooses" to not follow a command I give him, the second I start to say the word no, he turns and tries to bite me. In some cases he even starts to bite before I say no because he knows it's coming.

Now, why does he choose not to follow a command. Well many reasons, one being another animal or something else he is intrested in doing. So if I am out healing him around and he sees another dog or a person and he wants to go greet them but I won't let him he will disobey the command and go his own way. If I try to correct he attacks. He also has redirected aggression issues which is something that I have tried to fix but no luck. An example of that is one day he and my other dog were in the backseat of the truck. Another dog is walking up to my truck on the right side (the side my border collie was on). As the dog starts to walk by my truck my border collie is barking at him. As the dog passes by from right to left my border collies field of vision also goes right to left. As soon as my lab mix (who is seated on the left side) comes into vision of the border collie he attacks her. No reason what so ever except the fact that she is there and he can get to her.

Like I said, this is actually a fairly common temperment for a border collie. My neighbor has one too and he has some issues like mine but his does not bite as easy. He keeps his dog in the garage, he never goes inside. During the day however the dog is out free but is very good about staying on his own property but I would not go on his property or it won't end well. Also a very friendly dog most of time, he loves to play fetch and will bring you a stick to throw. You just really have to respect them. I admit that my border collie is a little over the top but still fairly in line with the breeds temperment.

Border collies are amazing dogs, temeperment aside. They are everything I always wanted in a dog as far as capabilities and playing go. He is an amazing frisbee catcher and ball catcher. Very fun to play with. Very fun to show off his skills as well when he is in the mood. From high fives and bowing to flipping treats off his nose and catching them and playing dead and speak and all that stuff. Just a ton of fun. He is also great in the pool and the lake and stuff. When he listens, nothing compares.....

Have raised trained worked with several borders and GSD who were trained for police dogs. Pronged collars only make matters worse. They are wonderful smart smart dogs yours just doesn't think of you as leader. The why is probably several layers deep and up to you to unravel. Twice once on Milans show and then again on Its Me or the Dog there have been canines with the exact problems as yours. Very fixable I wish you luck they are wonderful critters. My son has a border that travels across the country with him and he has never owned a leash nor has she needed one.

He did not start on a pronged collar. He started clicker training. At about 4 he started with a pronged collar and then at about 5 went to shock collar. To be 100% honest, he has trained the best with the pronged collar. He almost never wears it anymore and when I heal him without it, he pulls when I heal him with it, he does not pull. As for very fixable, you clearly are smarter than the 5-10 people that have tried to train him in the past. All respected dog trainers and have done it for years. As for your son, I'm glad he got one of the good ones, they are not all like mine, I know that. However, I have little to no repsect for anyone who does not own a leash for there dog. No matter how well trained you think they are they should ALWAYS be leashed when not in appropriate areas. Even if you just hold the lead for show. If you truly trained dogs for police work you of all people know that. I have been around police dogs and although they know their work, they are not the best trained when it comes to behavior which is why ALL police dogs are leashed. I have yet to see any K9 cop use their dog unleashed, I have seen them drop the lead but never not had one at all.

Any other "professional" dog trainers here? I love when people tell me what my issue is with my dog. I'll tell you what, I'll give anyone a chance to correct his behavior, because I care about him which is why I have spent thousands on him, litterlly. I have spent about 500 on trying medication. I have spent over 2,000 on training him in group training when he was 0-2 years. I have spent 2,000 on a personal dog trainer that came to my house. I have spent a few hundred on day care and play groups. My dog trainers and my vets have no answer but all this time I had Ellieroo right here under my nose. Man I'm an idiot. By the way, I have watched Milan episodes when he is training a b/c and one thing I noticed is that they are always very short segments and the b/c's have very simple issues that even I could correct. I garuntee that if Cesar ever took on my dog, it would never be aired. I would love to see cesar take my b/c and put him on his side after a disobeyed command. It would never happen. I'll put money on it.

I have to ask, how does your son bring his dog to the vet? I have had many vets in the last 5 years because we move a lot and every single one of them requires a leash for the dog. I also once used a vet who took care of the police dogs for the county and every time they were in the vets office or parking lot, they were leashed..... And pulling to come over to my dog I might add. This was 3 seperate dogs on 3 seperate visits. They were not trained on heal at all...... I worked with a K9 cop from NH and his dog was not very obediant either as a matter of fact.

I've breezed through this thread .....wooo....lots of posts.

As far as "shooting to scare"? My Labs are going to try & retrieve what you shot, not run away.

As far as "professional" dog trainer? Hang your shingle & charge to train - you're a pro.

My dogs go with me to feed the chickens, ducks, pheasants - they "sit" outside the pen and watch. Not because they want to, but because I told them to. Every situation is different, & usually starts with unresponsible ownership. My dogs (knock on wood) have never gotten out, probably because they are 99% in the house, & none of my neighbors in town have chickens, but I just hope and pray a little common sense prevails if I'm ever in this situation. I heard recently locally of a chicken owner shooting his next door neighbor's chickens because they came and got in his flowers. Did he visit with his neighbor first? Call the police? No, just shot them. Absurd in my books.

dogs get shot here fairly regularly difference is the farmers that shoot them tell no one and do not post about it online and no one is the wiser it is just another way to remedy a problem one way of trying not to dispatch an uncontrolled and potentially dangerous animal is to spray them with a mix of peanut oil 15 ounces and skunk musk 1 ounce this happens 1 time the next time the problem is dealt with permanently

I do have to say that if that is typical temperament for a border collie, I will avoid them at all costs. Have had extremely smart dogs in my life, but refuse to have an aggressive one, just like I refuse to have a human aggressive rooster. I actually consider a human aggressive rooster rather stupid for biting the hand that feeds him so likewise, I don't think much of the intelligence of a dog that does the same. Thanks for the warning on that one! Geez. I have no issue with shooting a dog harassing my birds and I guess I'd be quicker to shoot a border collie, now that I know this.

That said, it would be best if we tried to stay on track with the original intent of this thread. Other Pets and Livestock would be the place to discuss temperaments and training of dogs.

Am not trying to judge but that seems to be what has happened just was offering what I had hoped would be helpful "if not thought of things" to try ?? As for vet and son's dog nope not there either but that is between him and an vet who is ok with it.As for police dogs always !! on leash except in handlers home. So I wish you well never tried to make it otherwise.I admire the fact that you have stayed with and loved a dog most would have walked away from .... So off I go from under your nose, very sorry all was taken the wrong way!
