Dog turned predator - how do I convince my husband to get rid of it?

No hard feelings at all. We all learn, one way or another, hehe. And Flock, thank you for your understanding also. I do believe the doggie will still have plenty of years ahead of it with another family, so don't say that it hasn't had a chance yet. I'm sure that if you guys do come to an agreement to rehome it, that it will have more attention there and any transgressions will be forgotten.

Yes, and that's what makes it all so sad. The dog never had a chance to have a better life.

Maybe some of those bones you had fed him in the past perforated his intestines. Never ever feed dogs cooked bones - only raw. Table scraps are not a suitable balanced diet for a dog.

Oh my goodness, the woman tells you her dog died and we continue to rag on her about what she was feeding the dog! It doesn't matter really since the dog is dead and it is probably a good thing for everyone but the dog since the owner (her husband) was not the responsible owner. This type of dog is not good for inexperienced handler.

I didn't see that as ragging, but conveying information. If they happen to get another dog, it is good for them to know so they don't continue feeding cooked bones. If you would have bothered to keep reading, the OP seemed grateful/interested in the info.

I realize it's been over a year, and I haven't been very active on BYC lately - actually I just now feel settled with the move, fixing up the house and adjusting to a new baby - but I wanted to update this thread.

We now have a new dog - a mixed Chihuahua (yes, quite a change from having all those large dogs!). I was skeptical at first because I used to think they were bred purely to be companion dogs, but he's actually very territorial and excellent in warding off foxes, stray cats, dogs and even our neighbour's goats! He's tiny, so no danger of him knocking my children down to the ground, and my 6-year-old walks him quite comfortably. Today I saw with my own eyes how he chased away a dog 20 times his size (I'm not kidding!). Also he doesn't see chickens as prey since he's about the size of a rooster himself. So, just letting everybody know we DO learn our lessons.

I likewise am soo glad that your new little dog is working out. I read everything on this post when it was started but never commented but I always thought you handled it very well, epically when so many were verbally attacking you. You are a great person! I wondered what happened to you and your story. Thank you very much for the update.
