Elmo, thanks for the concern--she is up to date on her shots. It was the first thing I said to my husband once we got her back in the house & took a look at her.
Please check with your vet...Even if she is current on her rabies shot, she will need a booster after a possible exposure.
We had a very strange experience with a raccoon a few years ago, before we got chickens. My husband left the garage door open one night and a raccoon got inside and climbed into the attic, then got trapped there when I closed the garage door. After hearing a ruckus in there the next night, I figured out the problem and left the door open again, thinking the coon would simply exit.
It was quiet the next night, so I figured all was well. I was wrong. I needed to get something in the garage, so I opened up the people door, and out walks the raccoon straight at me. I started walking backwards, quickly. Just at this moment, our elderly Boston terrier ran around the corner of the house, spotted the raccoon and ran towards it. The raccoon turned away, and our dog (this is embarrassing) quickly mounted the raccoon from the rear and started...um...humping it.
I know how dangerous raccoons are, so I started yelling my head off. I scared our dog so he stopped what he was doing and the raccoon ran away as fast as I've ever seen a critter move. It ran straight up our 6 foot tall board fence like it was flat on the ground.
There wasn't a mark on our dog, but we took him in for a rabies booster just in case. What a close call!
