Dog won't stay off couch

Yup, you are reading it correctly. It was mrs x purple (Satan) who allowed the dogs on the couch. I always yelled but she didn't care. Oh yeah, she gets to live with her parents now (hahaha sorry, evil laugh). Let's see if her mother, the evil that spawned Satan herself, will alow dogs on the couch. Oh yeah, I forgot, her mother didn't allow her to bring HER dog so I had to dispose of it. (Don't worry, Sandy has a good home with MoodusNewChick).

So that leaves me with Jake and Jenny, who were MY dogs anyways. Jake knows he isn't supposed to go up there but does only when I'm not home.

Yes, his smell is there. The couch is covered in baking soda trying to suck up the smell.

I have a nice futon at my Mom's I was gonna bring home to replace the couch with but won't until I know he will stay off.

Crating is not an option. He was crate trained as a pup and doesn't poop in the house or chew anything either. He's a good dog.

Sounds more like a dominance thing, where he thinks he's the boss and you're 'below' him. Him sleeping on your bed, or even in the room isn't helping, since only the highest ones in the pack get the most comfortable/highest sleeping positions. You should be eating first, going through hallways and doors first (if he pushes past you you know you have a problem), and he should be following you on walks etc.

Try being the alpha dog for the rest of your/his life, and see how things turn out.

Search 'Cesar Millan' or 'dog dominance alpha' or something, then read up.

Or you can use noise - like a fog horn thing.
Get a closed circuit TV with video, and then as soon as he gets on the couch use the foghorn or other insanely loud sounds. Dogs seriously hate loud noises, and after using them successfully a couple times he might not want to get back up. Or you could try aerosol spray. I've heard that dogs dislike the spray too.

EDIT: Spelling.

That's called setting boundaries.

Dogs need set rules to 'function' properly; if allowed to do as they please, they try to become the alpha and will become basically unstable in their attempts to keep you (the lower ones in the pack) in line according to a dog's perception of 'in line.' Which, let me tell you (!), is NOT fun to be around. :hmm;

I am the Alpha here and always have been. He is allowed on the bed but only when it's time to sleep. He waits on the floor until I turn out the lights and tell him to come up. (Most of the time). I've pondered not allowing him on the bed but he is my pup and I want him there. The bedroom door gets closed when I'm gone because he will hang out on the bed, as long as I'm not home.

He does seem to become the dominant one when I'm not home. This may be worsened by Jenny, my other dog.

I have security cameras in the house. He will not go on the couch when I am home and as soon as he hears the truck or bike in the driveway he gets off the couch. It's almost like a game.

Exactly. You're the alpha when you're there.
As soon as you leave, Jake sees it as fair game to take over for you.

Somehow you need to get across his (apparently) thick skull that the couch is YOURS, and not only when you're at home, but ALL THE TIME.

My dog thought getting in the garbage and digging was fun... But then he figured out what mouse traps are for.

I do suggest padding the snapper thing though in case it gets stuck on him.

Huh. I thought security cameras went outside the house.

I'm no help here. Both dogs and all three cats get on my sofa and the bed. I just vacuum that sucker off periodically and change the sheets a lot. Plus I seldom invite people over.

I'm glad I wasn't the only one to think of mouse traps.

If he wants to be alpha when I'm not around I'm ok with that. He's part Pitt yet has never harmed a chicken. I trust him completely(almost) around them too.

The camera inside is temporary and only for him. Now the ones on the outside are a different story. I can monitor my property from my iPhone.

I don't mind the fur, it's the dog smell that bothers me. I buy a new cheap comforter once a month for my bed. He's worth it.

My dog's mom was a pitt/boxer, (and according to the person who we got him from) his dad was shepherd/chow. I can leave him with baby chicks and ducklings with no problems. Probably since I would never tolerate ANY weird interest in them, but they were raised up from babies about a year into his life too. He actually protects them all from the neighbor's GSP. WOW she can run fast!

Never been near GSP's before we moved; not exactly the best dog to have hanging around ducks (and chickens).
