dogs and chickens

Thank you. hopefully the shock collar won't be needed but.....
Boxer are such sweet dogs for all their fierce looks
The coop is shaping up and the run almost done. I think the dogs are thinking it is for them.

Look over this option. It would be far less cruel and probably less costly than a shock collar. http://canterlc.com/StopChickenKillerDogs/site/pages/home/

I used to worry about our dogs with the chickens...but now I feel really good about them being together.... and... it is the dogs snitching the chicken's feed that is more of a concern.

Thank You! Thank You! Thank You! I am so excited to try this with my dogs. Our Samoyed "knows" we don't like her to kill chickens. She won't even go near the chickens if she thinks we are watching. However, no matter how closely we watch and work to make our pen dog proof, there have been times where she slipped out the door as someone came inside. Given enough time, she will find her way into the pen. The last two times, she entered the pen, but did not kill anything, so my hope is she is halfway there. I just need additional help to really feel confident that this bad habit is broken. My dream is that my chickens could free-range under the watchful eye of my dogs and live in peace with them. We shall see. Definitely going to give the program a try.

A two x four and a water hose worked great for me! I only lost one out of ten to an extremely aggressive black lab/hound mix! I know this is a 10 % mortality, but you have to know the dog. He is varmit chaser on steroids! Almost every morning he has a fresh kill of something drug up in the yard. This morning it was a chipmunk. Mostly it is armadillos and possums. Not much left of squirrels and rabbits, guess they taste too good! LOL

He will not mess with the chickens at all now. We recently got two rabbits and he WILL get them given half a chance. He does know they are off limits, but his hound dog instincts are too much.Especially since he routinely catches and eats wild ones.

I know this may sound bad but you can break a dog from chassinf chickens if you put a muzzal around thier mouth and put them in with the chickens once the chickens figure out they cant harm them they will stop running and flog the dog after that the dog will go around the chickens and not throw them or chace them and if you have a dog that kills tie the chicken to his collar and let it be this will stop them from doing after he drags it around for a while

that is a bad idea X1000. A dog doesn't need to use its mouth to kill a chicken. Some dogs may be scared and intimidated by the muzzle. Others will react by just bouncing on the chickens and killing them as usual.

Dragging around a dead chicken isn't going to stop the dog either. It's just cruel.

Actually train the dog. When the dog is out, chickens are away. When the dog is out, chickens are away. You don't leave them out together unsupervised. Start training a solid 100% reliable recall and "leave it" commands. Reward the dog for paying attention to you and ignoring the birds. Set the dogs up to succeed and everyone is happy - dog, owner, chickens.

Exactly dainerra!!! Make doing the right thing easy for the dog!!!

Chicks @ feathers I do hope you aren't using the methods you mentioned above, it really is just cruel, please reconsider.

Hi ChicKat. Did you try the above method yourself and if so did it work? I am caring for a puppy I am considering adopting- he's a little less than one year old, a little black mutt who is great with kids and me but not so great around chickens and cats so far. I'm sort of strapped for cash this month due to car repairs, etc. and do not want to order the materials if it doesn't work.

Let me know. Thanks!
