This is my fault: Sad news as I had the chicks outside in what I thought was a pretty secure fenced raised bed. Bird netting over the top and a tarp over a portion of it. They were enjoying being out there while I was working on the coop. My 2 dogs of course curious but had settled down as the day went on. I took something out to the front yard, 90 yo neighbor wanted to talk. Left the dogs and chicks in the back yard for too long. My smallest dog found a way into the pen and killed all 4 of my 5 week old chicks. No idea if it was just trying to play or intentional. Definitely will not trust them again. Here I am building a dang fortress for them and I leave them alone for a bit and my dog who can squeeze through small spaces gets my chicks, totally my fault.

Ordered 4 chicks from chickens for backyards. Will NOT let this happen again. Work continues on my chicken fortress.

I'm definitely not building this run and coop to be empty! Their demise is my fault, and beating myself up about it. Just sick about my chicks, even left all my tools etc out in my backyard last night: not the brightest thing to do, no rain at least and no one stole them. I lived in farm country for 20+ years so I can accept the nature of animals, though not always like the results.

Clean out the brooder today so it's ready for new babies.

Get yourself a electric collar with hand remote. Turn it on high. Let the chicks out same as before. When your dog alerts on the chicks hit the button. If the dog gets close to the chick pen hit him again. After a few times he will hate those chicks. It really works.

Sorry but I don't want my dogs to hate my chickens or learn to be fearful. I would rather have them learn to protect them as they get to adults.
