Dogs attacking coop at night

Petra:

Electric fence being suggested is of the type used to confine livestock. Works like this:

Best use would be multiple strands of poly tape/rope or light wire, strung low to the ground, and used to surround a larger area to keep dogs at a bit of distance from the coop......once they get to point blank range within close reach of the birds, they may go into a frenzy and will lung and attack. At a distance, they may still be approaching slowly.....in stealthy sneak mode when they encounter the fence, get zapped.

But even a fence draped around the coop will be a deterrent. One with a nice hot charge is no fun. A weak fence may not slow down a determined dog. A hot one )7,000 volts plus line voltage) will get the attention of nearly all of them.

A basic how it's done video, although they do some things not needed. Like extra post for the charger. Hang it on one of the corners instead. You might also be able to simply use a corner post as your ground rod. Or string an extra uninsulated wire which is tied to the ground connection on the fencer, in which case all four corners then become ground rods too. If it tests out, it is hot.

For longer runs, I use donut corners and will include a tensioning ratchet to tighten it up. But otherwise, that is about all there is to it. Fairly simple and highly effective deterrent.

To keep chickens in and varmints out, I like four strands, bottom about 5 inches from the deck, with 5 or 6 inch spacing between them. For longer runs, use insulated step in posts between the corners. For some uses, gates may not be needed. Just step over it.

My coop is very well built; only bears should be able to breach it!
Electric fencing is an excellent option if it's legal where you live.
Find out what you can legally do about the loose dog, before you get in trouble over it. Here, it's not okay to use birdshot or intentionally wound the animal. It's legal to trap and send the dog to Animal Control, or shoot it for cause, but not injure it.
Electric fencing and a secure coop will have you sleeping better at night!

A few nights ago I woke up from loud crashing noises behind the house. It was a feral dog trying to break into the chicken coop. Luckily the coop is quite sturdy and didn't get damaged (yet). When I yelled at the dog at the top of my voice, it ran off, came back and ran off again. I've seen it since a few times lurking around in the area, also during the day. We've got lots of feral dogs in our area. The local administration should take care of them but often doesn't. Shooting them is not an option. Poisoning is also problematic as I've got small kids. Is there any other good way to get rid of dogs or to deter them?

Could you trap those feral dog's and then drop them off on your local administration's door step? I would think that they would be forced to deal with them then.

I've been thinking about buying a paintball gun to use on coyotes and/or a neighborhood stray. That might be a relatively safe option to use at a distance.

Also, depending on local laws, you may be able to purchase bear pepper spray, which could be used at a distance.

The drawback with both is that you would have to be there when the dog returns. If you are at work or in bed it does no good. Just trying to brainstorm some alternatives.

I kid you not. they've been selling Predator Pee to repel all different kinds of predators, including dogs, for over 30 years. the Predator pee is collected humanely from zoos and sold to this gentleman. his website is extensive . you can get exactly what you need and he's always there to answer questions for you. For dogs, you need bear urine.
Best ,
