Dogs got almost all of my turkeys.

I'm so sorry about the loss of your turkeys.

I had my neighbor's "new" huge pit bull kill one of my first ducks this last week & it is so disheartening. I had to finish up putting up the back fence myself as I knew it would return & our understanding with this particular neighbor's character. I am going to think about a electric fence now for "added protection," too. I just don't understand how they work....yet.

It is good you don't give up hope & will get some more though!

You should have called the animal control to come get them. AND YES they will be back for more probably now that they know where food is! I would be waiting for them with my BB gun ready! LOL

I know the pain it too. Dogs Killed 12 of mine they came back 2 nights later and killed the last one I had left .It sucks was looking foward to raising some this year out of my stuff.

I am really sorry! That is a horrible sight to see when you go out... and it never gets any easier. Some years ago raccoons killed all of my call ducks, this last year a neighbors little dog (not a PB) dug into my chicken tractor and killed all but 7 of my replacement layer flock. I don't think that I would be waiting with a BB gun. More like a .45 or something. A BB gun will just make them mad, and/or make them more wary later. And trying to get a dogs owner to pay up isn't always easy. In a lot of cases, poultry aren't considered livestock unless you are trying to keep them in town.

She should be reasonably safe.....she is right next to the house in a very tight pen. And for added protection we have living with us for the moment a huge five pound chihuahua that barks at any commotion.

If you want to keep it from happening again, you MUST call animal control. I just went through this with a neighbor's marauding dog which would come back every few days (they were 1/4 mile away).

I had electric fence run along the top of our split rail to keep our dogs from getting out. They tried once after the fence was turned on and never tried again. I plan to use it for added protection for the chickens, but I think I want two strands to be hot. One up top and one about a foot off the ground..... it was easy to install and very affordable. Has anyone used electric that DIDN'T work?

Please report this to animal control/police immediately if you haven't already. Document it. Take photos, no matter how grizzly. The dog's people must be made accountable (while it is unknown at the moment who they are this can likely be figured out). The dogs will be back and even if they don't get your remaining bird they will harm others somewhere if not stopped.
Safeguard the remaining bird 10 times better than you think she needs. She watched a horror show and is likely stressed and will need TLC and friends.

Check out threads by horsejody and even me (luckily I didn't have anybody die but there is a lot of good info provided by others in the threads). You will in these and other threads obtain lots of good guidance on how to handle this terrible situation.

Please keep us posted. I am soooooo sorry for your birds
