Dogs killed everything

Just posted this on another thread but wanted to get it out there again so everyone would see it.
Our nabours dogs dug under our chain link fence then tore a hole in the chicken wire on to separte pens and killed 20 or more ducks and chickens. All we have left are 4 chickens and 1 duck. I live in alabama is there any legal action I can take. We've given them the chance to get rid of the dogs but they haven't. The dogs even came back the next night to kill the cats. That's how we knew it was there dogs. We've had most of the chickens for 6 or more years. And they could care less. It makes me sick. The only time anything like this has ever happened was when my own dog killed 5 of the chickens and I found him a new home the next week. So they can't just ask I don't like there dogs I got rid of my own dog for the same thing. What can I do? I'm lost.
If it were me, the dog would most certainly die of lead poison the first chance I got.
I would not hesitate to kill my own dog let alone someone elses. To me the chickens are food for my family, dog cats and other predators are nothing. So it's a no brainer!

I've thought about killing them trust me. I'm to much of an animal lover and if my dog did the samething ( which he did and was rehomed the next week) the other people would go about it the right way. So I've talked to the police and When the dogs get out again they will come pick them up. We are also going to make them pay for damages and the cost to replace the chickens and the feed cost to get them back to laying size. Thanks for all the advice guys I really Appreciate it.

I am so sorry for your loss. Dogs killed 14 out of 16 chickens last week on our property. Chased and killed two in our garage. Turned on game cam and caught them returning to scene of crime. Turns out they are good friends of our family. How much is fair to charge them per bird? I'm thinking 20 dollars per bird times 14?

How much will it cost to replace them? Were they laying? How many eggs will you lose between now and the time the replacements start laying? How much food will you have to buy until they start laying? Under the Common Law Doctrine you have the right to be made whole.

Wow, many good points I did not even consider. 5 laying. Others within days of point of lay. Eat 4 dozen eggs a week at 3 dollars a carton. New chicks are 6 dollars each and come October 6th. No eggs for 6 months. That's going to be expensive for them.

Update:

They just agreed to pay me $244 dollars as I requested.

Glad to hear it.
I hope you also reminded them that next time you will shoot first and come collecting for damages second. (even if you have no plans to shoot).

Now, you now realize that chicken wire is only good for keeping chickens in and nothing out. It is my belief that sense you are getting more chickens it is your responsibility to upgrade the coop. You have the responsibility to protect your livestock.

We have 7 non fenced acres and they were free ranging behind my house. Getting an estimate for fencing large area with Hotwire Thursday. Coop and run is hardware cloth buried two feet down so have had no issues. I am not the original poster so I didn't have chicken wire. Just added my own story. Think your comment was for original poster but wasn't sure:)
