Dogs more important than Chickens?

You kill my dog, and I become John Wick...and I'm not the only person that feels this way, just saying...

I’d kill a dog whose owners I gave at least a couple warnings. My chickens are my babies and I don’t care what kills them, I won’t tolerate it. But, no, I wouldn’t kill a dog without giving the owners a fair chance to fix the problem.

My brothers got 8-10 dog kennels at his house and 3 across the street and all of them have dogs in them. He rescues everyone he finds running loose so it won't get into people's garbage or get into mischief and wind up getting shot

We started off with interior chain link, horse fencing and panel fence areas for each group of animals and expanded a little at a time to solid 6ft perimiter fence for 70 acers. Over 24 years you can get alot done starting with what you need and expanding couple 100ft at a time when you can. No one wants to shoot a dog, not even the open range cattle ranchers want to do it. When your neighbors don't keep them home, you can either trap them and transport them into the city, or shoot them to prevent loss. Securing my own property was the best option for us not only for our own dogs not becoming problems for our neighbors also not being put into a situation to have to shoot their dogs.

My property is entirely fenced. If an out of control dog is so rabid to jump my fence and kill my pets, I kill it. Its owner better stay put because such irresponsible person shouldn't own a dog in the first place. If their dog is dead, it's entirely their fault.

I must have missed something, what do you mean by competition?
The title of this thread is, "(are) dogs more important than chickens?" I don't see it as a competition. To owners of chickens, their chickens are theirs to love and protect. They cherish them. They are certainly more important to them than somebody else's dogs. To a dog owner, the same usually applies. Their dogs are more important to them than your chickens are to them. But that does not mean that their dog(s) are more important to them than your chickens are to you. There is no comparison. It's not a competition.

I see, I took it as someone saying “it’s just a chicken”

Yes, people do. People who don't have chickens. My neighbor, whose dog got one of my girls, may have thought that, but I asked him to reimburse me what it would cost me to replace her. She was a young laying pullet at the time so I asked for $25. I also let him know that there was an emotional cost as well. He does a good job of keeping his dog at home now and we have become friends, which is worth far more than the cost of a chicken to me.

I have had 3 dogs in the last 30 years, one every ten years, some of the dogs over lapped each other a bit, the younger one meeting the older one. I have had who knows how many chickens during that same time. I recently had a chance to not have chickens at all. I had a weasel wipe out my hens. I quickly hatched more to replace the loss. (Weasel taken care of, and coop secured.) I decided I cannot live without chickens. When my current dog, 13.5 years old, passes on I don't plan on replacing him.

As a child, I was at a beach, kids were throwing rocks at ducks, I "made" them stop, when their mom came to their defense, cigarette in one hand, beer in the other, she said..."They are only ducks."
