Dogs Vs. Chickens. Which Are Better Pets

Hi All:

Thanks for the nice builds on the original post. I know I'm preaching to the choir in this forum, but I hope other backyard gardeners get the message. Chickens are so easy to keep, I'm surprised that more people haven't done it.
By the way, I just added two bee hives. From what I can tell so far, they are also pretty low maintenance, but we'll see how much honey I get at the end of the year.

Definitely chickens make better pets.

Cute & Cuddly

•Chickens: Tame enough to hold, but not exactly what I'd call cuddly.
•Dogs: Definitely cute and cuddly. And then there are those sad brown eyes looking at you.
•Winner -- Dogs

Disagree with that one, chickens are definitely cuddly. Most cuddly animals I know of.

My vote: Chickens! I decided to get chickens because I thought they were interesting and I would like to have fresh eggs, but I never imagined I would love them this much! I started out thinking we could get 4-6...somehow it turned into...ummm let me count...36, I think.

# Chickens: Fill the feeder as needed; generally, just a few times per week.
# Dogs: Feed every day, two times each day. Supplement with table scraps when begging occurs.
A few times a week??? talk about every day.
# Chickens: Let them out of the coop in the morning. Close the coop at night.
# Dogs: Put on your coat and go out in the pouring rain or snow to walk your dog. Do this two or three times each day for a minimum of 20 minutes each time. When you get home, use a towel to wipe off your dogs feet or suffer with muddy paw
prints on your floors. In urban and suburban locations, you need to clean up after your pooch, so talk along your pooper scooper and dog bags. Having fun yet?

What about slaving over the chickens' water in the pouring rain or snow? Every day. I have to say say I would rather get out and get exercise. Exercise that does not include dragging out bucket after bucket of water. And letting the chickens in is really fun when you have a silkie ripping up your hands and face with her claws.

Dogs generally live with you, so dog hair gathers on your floors and your furniture as well, because dogs sleep on the couch whenever they can get away with it. And of course, there are those little accidents on the floor now and again which you'll need to clean up. Get out those paper towels.
Give your dog a buzz cut like mine!

Clean the coop once per week -- takes about 20 minutes.

20 minutes?, I wish.

But anyway these are just my experiences and opinions about chickens versus dogs. I do think it is a great article to send to people think about getting chickens.
and I really do love my chickens

Well since your dog would die for you and your children. I will pick my dogs over my chickens any day. If you have a dog and love your chickens more, something is wrong.

Honestly, thats why they call it mans best friend. Don't jump me my fellow chicken lovers. LOL

My crippled Rooster gets upset when he's not being cuddled. He even jumps on my mare's butt when it's time to go riding, I had to make him a special pack because of it.

But if it were to boil down to my dogs or my chickens, I'd go with my dogs because my dogs were the ones that saved my life when I got thrown from my horse. A chicken wouldn't have run for help screaming "Timmy's in the well!" But, my girls would throw a fit if I didn't feed them regularly. They knock on the back door [Piggy, and Derby at least] when they're hungry and let themselves in.

I'm chosing a tie between the two, but I was ROFL-ing on some of those.

ETA: thrown from my horse and broke my back. *
