dogs

My dog is controlled. And if I ever have a doubt about how she would react to a situation, she is leashed. For my peace of mind and that of the people and animals around me. She leaves our chickens alone, and actually seems to watch out for them, but I don't know if that is exclusive to ours so I don't let her run loose when we are visiting other friends with poultry or livestock. In my experience, dogs are happier when they know their place.

I live by another rule, too. My dogs live here, you don't. If you don't like dogs, don't visit.
I want to hang a sign on my front door that says "Pets welcome. Children must be leashed." but DH is afraid his daughter (& GS) would be offended.

I agree!

Wow. Yes I own dogs as does a very large percentage of BYC folk. Yes, my dogs are under my control. Yes, they stay on my property ALL THE TIME. They do not run loose, they do not roam, they do not come into contact with my own critters not to mention any of my neighbors. So YES, many of us here are dog owners who not only THINK we can control our dogs but DO! I am very sorry you had a bad experience. Many of us here have been in that same situation with other people's dogs and know exactly how you feel but you shouldn't come out and attack dog owners on a forum as a whole.

Agreed, Gritsar. Except I am certain I will hang a sign that says that when I own my own place someday!

hmm... People here care about their animals and are highly unlikely to be the ones you are 'preaching' to.
Please leave the 'choir' out of your argument. and go preach to the "visitor" that has caused you and your birds such a bad day.

I have my delightful little call ducks - because of my dogs. I herd my ducks with my Border Collies, and have had ducks bite my dogs. It's pretty funny to see a 1.5 lb sassy call duck hen bite the nose of a 35 lb Border Collie who is staring at her to try to get her to move the other way. However, my dogs will go to all lengths to avoid physical connection with the birds.

I've been a dog owner, trainer, breeder and lover for 25 years. I've had the little ducks for 5 years.

I joined the forum today because I have always found the people, information, posts to be so friendly and educational. When searching for hints, tips and help for my bird -related concerns more often than not 'Google' picks up something here. I immediately caught this thread due my passion for my dogs.

No one is less tolerant of bad dog ownership than the responsible dog owners. We know how what it takes to make our dogs upstanding members of the community.
I know bad things can happen... a forum like this is not the place to point fingers.

To the rest of you that have not had such a bad day, and are not 'dis-ing' the entire world of dog owners, thank you for all the insight that I have learned from over the years, and all the posts about your feathered friends that I have enjoyed immensely!

This. You're post was attacking dog owners in general and raised quite a few hackles because it was a rant. You can't paint us all with the same brush though. I am very sorry about your lost bantam, it's sad and awfully frustrating.

My solution is a little on the tough side, but really quite reasonable.
I NEVER allow anyone to drop-in. If someone does, they obviously don't know me and they will be asked to leave immediately. I always greet strange cars in the driveway, with a cell or cordless phone in my hand, pepper spray in my pocket. My 2 dogs have a huge, well fenced in area and they let me know if someone pulls in. If said vehicle has a dog in it? Well, I can move pretty fast when required and the door gets slammed shut before the dog ever exits. Much less the driver!

That's usually followed by a pretty stern lecture about irresponsible dog owners and how well I can handle a gun. Then they leave. I am actually very calm and polite, but firm.

If you have friends who continue to drop in uninvited? Put up signs that all dogs must remain in the vehicle and all loose dogs will be shot on sight. Anyone who disrespects your rules on your property is not really a friend.

I am sorry about you losing your favorite, and I DO understand your anger and frustration. But you can't just blame all dog owners, only the irresponsible ones.

I am a "Dog Lover". I have 7 VERY happy dogs, & most are spoiled rotten, but what I say,......goes. I am alpha dog & I can snap my fingers & every dog I have will come to me . I won't have a dog that I don't have controll over,& I have never had to lay a hand on them either. When I first get another dog & it acts up, I let out a vicious GROWL. That's all it takes to be alpha around here.
Here are my dogs.
