I got a miniature dachshund that I thought would be trouble because she's wound so tight and runs rabbits,squirrels and everything else out of the yard.When my chickens got old enough to turn out in the yard she got after'em.I didn't have to whip her, a few firm no's and some stern looks seemed to have worked.She's a pretty smart dog though,I've had some that were hard learners.
