I have four (out of six) mixed chicks that someone gave me and three(now two) bantams that were hatched out by their mom and still with her. The mom & babies are in a wire cage on top of cardboard in a stall. The others are in a cardboard box in the tackroom where it is warmer and they get a light at night for extra warmth. They probably don't need that now. They appear to be 6 to 8 weeks old; the hatchlings are almost 8 weeks old. After three chicks mysteriously died, I started sulmet and yogurt. Now one of the hatchlings looks lethargic, not moving a lot, may be even rapid breathing. All the chiks get medicated starter and yogurt. The sulmet has been given for 4 days at full strength and I am about to cut the dose in half. I suspect cocci but they aren't on the dirt yet. Also, I have raised chicks for years--both from incubator and letting moms hatch out eggs. I never had so many chicks die (thirty percent and threatening to go on). What more can I do.

I had 6 of 10 die on me in a matter of a few days. It was cocci. On advise I found here on BYC, I gave them Corid. They are still in the 5 day treatment period, so I don't count myseld out of the woods yet....but knock-on-wood I've not lost another one yet.

Good luck & I hope the chicks get better.
