domest vs wild geese

Hello, I am getting 4 Toulouse goslings in one month. I’m very excited about this but new to geese. I grew up and currently live on a farm but have only had chickens never waterfowl. Of course I am trying to learn everything about them and their care. I have found out a lot of information so far but can’t find anything on their interaction with wild geese. We live in the country and Canadian geese show up every spring/summer and live and raise young in the horse/cow field and use our pond.

We normally have a pair of Canadian geese and we believe an uncle that stay every year and raise a batch of goslings. They are pretty use to us coming and going in the field and pond. The gander will only honk for a short while then go about his business. The pond has a pretty good water flow and doesn’t get too mucky. I just didn’t know if there would be issues with parasites. Well try not to let our goslings mingle with theirs due to territorial issues.

Is there any other precautions for domestic geese using the same pond as wild? We figured they would have supervised visits to the pond and field especially the first year but is there any diseases we need to be aware of? Their home yard is 1/2 acre fenced with garden, orchard, and lawn. They will have a bathing pond in the yard, so don’t need to go to the pond if it will endanger them. I want to keep them safe but would love for them to swim on the pond also.

:welcome I would be Leary of letting my goslings around wild geese. I love Canada geese but since there is no way of knowing where they have been before they come there it’s probably best to keep them apart
Thank you. Do you think once they (CG) leave in the fall it would be safe to take them down then? How about next year?

If your pond is good size hopefully your geese will stay away from them like someone said Canada’s are very protective of their mates nest and young but all geese are. Yes most likely once they leave in the fall yours could enjoy the pond.
