Domestic geese hanging out with wild ones. Update: RESCUE SUCCESS

if you're going that far, I might put a tarp on the windward side... you don't want to fully enclose it, they'll need the ventilation. they'll handle the temperature, but it would be better if they weren't in direct wind. the view, probably not an issue. once you get started, they'll probably settle down and ride pretty quietly.

I think you should make it a party - you know, the goose rescue equivalent of a barn raising...

some hot chocolate or hot cider in thermoses, maybe some fresh backed muffins, or cheese and hard sausage... take photos, make a little video... a quick photo of the rescue crew with the geese in the kennels to put on your christmas cards...

Ha ha ha! Thought of that! I was already planning on bringing at the very least some cookies and some kind of beverage for everyone, as a Thank You! Would be great to get photos and video, as well. I like that! The rescue equivalent of a barn raising!

What a great idea, too bad you couldn't get the press involved but then more people would be dumping off their birds there because more would know about the grear dumping site. Please keep us updated...

So, I'm going out today to check on them and would like to sneak along some food for them. (We are not supposed to feed the birds there) I'm not going out to buy them anything. Of the following things that I have on hand, which things would be appropriate for these geese:

Chicken layer feed
BOSS
Cooked brown rice
Veggie scraps

Veggie scraps and rice and chicken feed would probably be the best of the 4 my goose won't touch Boss, but if you have a little scrap bread to add they will probably love you for it, my gander loves his bread better than anything else. He gets a little everyday along with his feed.

They can eat the Layer Feed, That's most likely what they will be getting here. Unless/Until I can get the feed store to carry actual Duck/Geese feed. If you have any wheat handy, they are supposed to like that as well, and/or Scratch (I think that's what I'll be bringing for the rescue to lure them in, along with some feed.)

I'm actually going out to work on prepping the barn, so it's ready to go when needed. I'll come and check email here and there, and will have my phone. Let me know if you need anything else.

Just sent you another PM.

I have feed them layer but I switched a couple years ago to Purina Flock Raiser so the males wouldn't have to get the extra calcium, and I just put out oyster shell for my girls. Scratch is something they love too, just don't want to make it sole diet. To get those geese to where they feel comfortable around you, I wouldn't worry much about what to feed just make sure it's something they like. than when you get them home start giving them a good diet. They are vegetarians.

Good news. All parties that have a stake at the wetlands are on board for us going forward with the rescue. Now we just need to get the rescuers (Hockmangirl) enough help for the wrangling and transport

They were all still there today. It looks like two ganders and the rest females. They ate the chicken feed and some bread. I had some lettuce in my pocket which I forgot about because, frankly, one of those ganders scares me

We'll keep you updated and hopefully will have a video of the rescue.
