Dominique Thread!

Haha, that's funny. At least one of my guys has started and the first few times we heard him we looked around for something dying. He's no American Idol

Last summer when a male orp started crowing, it sounded exactly like "Homer Simpson" shouting "WooHoooooo." It always made me laugh. This summer we have a male that started crowing at 12 weeks, then started mating the hens at 14 weeks. I kept wondering what was going on when I found fertile eggs (no roo), then I witnessed him in action. Even now at 5 months, he leaves the pullets of the same age alone & only goes for the hens.

Are dominique hens towards the top of the pecking order in a mixed flock? I have a flock of doms and one dark brahma cockerel and all my pullets boss him around. I was wondering because they tend to be so mellow towards humans just was wondering if they're the same or different to other chickens. Thanks.

I can only speak for my Dom hens, I have them in with Ameraucaunas and a Jubilee Orp and they are head chicken 1 and 2 in my flock. They are in with docile breeds though so we'll have to see what the breeders and more experienced Dom folk say.

I too have a mixed flock for part of the year... I split them when breeding..

Anyway, yes, the Doms are the head of the flock.

I have them with Marans and rose combed Leghorns.

The Dom cock is firm with the other cocks when they are tossed together, but never mean. The Dom cock reigns supreme and everyone else bows to his gentle rule.

It seems most cockerels get kinda bossed around by pullets/hens until they mature/get confident around the girls. We've had only 2 cockerels in our history and both boys were unsure of themselves until they matured. Our friends had 2 EE cockerels 6-mo-old who had to be isolated from the hens and pullets who chased them around mercilessly. I think that's why most owners keep their cockerels segregated from the girls until they reach maturity.
