Barred Rocks ROCK. Dont forget it! I love barred rocks just because , well, they are awesome. However , both of the breeds are relatively the same. Egg production and disposition are about the same. But, i LOVE rocks.
Personally I like the look of the barred rocks better with the nice crisp barring but like the way the dominiques carry theirselves better plus I like the rosecomb better for our cold winters. Both are beautiful birds when they look like they are suppose to! Main differences are the combs, BR have large single combs and dominiques have rose combs, and barring patterns which the BR has nice crisp barring compared to the cuckoo or hawk feathering of the dominique. I think the BR are suppose to lay a larger egg also but not really sure.
I like the Dominique breed better. There not a "large" breed with roosters a 7 lbs and hens at 5 lbs but I still get a good size egg. Eggs in the picture are in a standard large egg carton.
Dominiques have a history, and of course everyone will say they have the best.
If everyone has a blue car why would you want a blue car?
Go with the original.
They are similar in that they are both heritage breeds in the American class & both are a dual purpose breed. I chose to breed Dominiques because they are the first of the breeds developed in America & there are relatively few people breeding them. I feel it's important to maintain their genetics. Barred Rocks are somewhat more reradily available.
Either breed makes an excellent choice for a backyard flock.
When I got my Barred Rocks my grandmother said they were dominickers I gues because they hadnt heard of the Barred Rock when she was little. I would actually pick the Dominique over the Barred Rock, they have a heritage. Its like with mustangs most people refer an older model to a newer model.
