I saw some chicks at a feed store last week. They were oh so cute. Yesterday I called back to see what breed they were. The guy said Dominques and all pullets. I had to go past there anyway today but looked them up online 1st. Everything I read said males had that yellow spot on the head. I studied several pics too I grabbed a carrier, stuck it in the car and all giddy that I was gonna get some more..hehe
Well everyone one of those chicks had yellow spots on their heads and looked just like the male pics I saw online. None of them had the shadowing on the feet/legs like I read. So no one came home with me:-(

I was planning on getting like 10 or so. Two to keep and the rest to sale when they get bigger. I should just stop messing around and order me some girls of a good size egg laying breed. Maybe some Buff Orp?

This store has never had all pullets so I kind of don't beleive them. Before I got the chickens I have now, I went through alot of roos from that place. Found them all really good homes too. Around here it seems hard to find home for roos so I don't want to chance it again.

We have a mom and pop feed store around where I live and I guess they are just from that generation where where Dominiques were very common. So now any black chick that feathers out in a black and white barred pattern whether it be a true Dominique, Barred Rock, or Cuckoo Marans to them they are a Dominique. I actually had to bring in pictures of my birds to show her the differences in the combs because she swore she ordered Dominiques. And the little chicks clearly had straight combs. So I would definitely check their little combs out too. You should be able to tell from that if they are at least going to have a rose comb or not and then chances are they are indeed Dominiques. I did eventually got her to order me some but it took a few minutes to convince her she had Barred Rocks.

Dominiques are easy to sex as chicks with about 90% being correct. Dominiques are the only chicken I have on the farm. The spot on the head then when in doubt compare that with the color of the shanks. It will give you 90% or better on the sex. And by the way we are talking Dominique from the original post! Also on the other hatchery birds if you order pullets you should get pullets or they are screwing you over!

Ummmm.......yeah, I know, hence my saying "even on easier sexed breeds". I got 1 Barred Rock (sexed the same as a Dominique) "sexed pullet" from TSC...."she" is one of my adorable little cockerels.​

I went back again to look. They all look the same with the spot on their head.
What does a rosecomb look like on a baby? They are over a week old and their little combs are single and look just like the combs my OEG babies when they were that age.
I don't think they are what they said and still passed them up.

Maybe the info you found was on sexlinks. All barred chicks like barred rocks, dominiques, and marans will be black with a yellow spot on the head, some people say the ones with a larger spot are the males, that isnt always the case.
