Pay attention to DEC warnings and observe the quarry. BTW, we avoid venison and squirrel entirely as well as some fish.

Other than not hunting in toxic waste dumps, for me it's the behaviors of the animals. If they are slow, weak, disoriented, or just don't look right, they probably aren't. If they are behaving normally they are probably OK.
