Done a lot of research but need more

She has a cage, but most of the day she is on top of it. She has a dark night-time cage that is smaller. Her area is about 8x10 in the same room where I am most of the day. This is the view from my desk. This cage would be too small if she were confined to it all the time. She has a floor area where she gets to scratch and forage in toys and pine cones. The cage is 20" wide by 39" tall inside the cage itself.View attachment 1801243
That's a decent sized cage.
She looks like she's being smug in the photo.

She is master of all she surveys! She barks and whistles at dogs walking past her windows. You can hear her across the street, but you do not always know it is a bird from the sound. She has an extensive vocabulary of sounds and words. But, the cage needs to be large enough for a bird to do some vigorous flapping inside if they do not get out a lot. She stays in it while we go somewhere, a few hours at a time at most. I just did not want to fill the room with a cage, so she is trained to stay on top. The brown paper around the seed catcher at the bottom is something she does not like to climb down on, so she stays on top. She can send things flying when she starts flapping her wings. She stands on the door and makes it move by flapping and holding on!

How long did it take to train her to stay on top?

She tried really hard for the first week. Now, she leans down and tears the paper, but will not go past it. She won't fly down, she crashes when she flies. She was probably clipped too soon and never really learned to fly. I have her flap hard while I hold her for the exercise. She loves to walk around the floor, so I have boxes like a chicken brooder all around her area. Very destructive -- if you let her, she would chew all the wood in the house! Her favorite toys are pine cones and plywood.

I spend time with her every day, and we take her with us when we travel in a small dog carrier. She gets Harrison's bird pellets, it is like having a small dog. She may out live me, so did not look for a young bird or chick. Just be aware of the lifetime commitment it is to have such a dependent pet.

That is awesome that you are being thorough researching. I really wish more people did that before they brought pets home so there were not so many I wanted animals. Keep us posted!
