DONE RAINSING PIGS! Pig on the Run (Part 2)

Today, I was downstairs and my wife was in the shower and my boys (4 and 2) were out in the backyard playing. I heard my 4 year old screaming hysterically and running in the house so I yelled up the stairs and asked what was wrong and he yelled that the pig was out and my two year old was still outside. I could hear the dog barking at this point and was running up the stairs and heard my two year old come running in the house crying. By the time I got out in the yard, the pig (who is now over 200 pounds) was fighting with my heeler dog. Based on what I found out from my kids later, the pig pushed out of the bottom of the fence of the pen and started chasing my two year old. At that point, my dog attacked the pig and both boys ran in the house.

When I got out the pig charged me and I punched it in the head (I thought I broke my hand) to get it to change its' mind. Even that didn't really phase the pig, just made it stop charging me over and over. I then was able to get it to go in a shop where I locked it up until I was able to repair the pig pen. The pig has a butcher date for next week but tomorrow we will call and have it moved up to this week if we can. I am done with this pig and I am done raising pigs. It's just not worth the hassle and the danger to my family, or the money involved to feed them up. I'll stick with butcher hogs from now on.

I am so thankful to have a great dog that was protective of my children today! She saved my life from a cow that was charging me two winters ago and stayed true to form today.

glad your children and you (maybe with the exception of your hand) are ok, and that your courageous dog was there for your kids. (BTW, is the dog ok too?) I think your decision on no more home-raised pork is a good one; hogs can be VERY, VERY dangerous, and a lot of people don't realize that. They can easily kill an adult, and it's so scary to think about one getting hold of a child. It would be "bye bye piggie" time here...

Yes Tess is just fine. She is a good dog, no matter how often DW calls her worthless.

Wow, what a story - event - trauma! Glad to hear that hand and dog are well, but how are the children? Did your little guys recover ok?

Yes pigs can be very dangerous. We grew up with them on the farm and my sister has a very large scar on her thight from one of our pigs. He was a really big boar, must have been close to 300 350 lbs, maybe larger. He was a 4H project from the nieghbours kids, so he was very tame. He use to get out all the time so all we had to do was walk up to him and chase him back in. Well my sister, she was about 10 at the time, walked up to him and patted him on the back. He turned and gave her a nudge, on the leg. She said he felt funny, but figured she was ok until our friend that was with us freaked out and told her her sock was all red. The boar had what was left of his tusk, they are usually cut when the pigs are babies, and it had ripped her leg open. He didn't mean to do it, but it was done. She got a really bad infection and the wound had to be reopened a few times, so she has a large keloid scar now.

I glad your kids are ok and your good dog is too. I will never raise pigs, I never liked them when we were kids.
