Dong tao chicken

There are, or at least were some dong tao, in the US. The guy I knew that had them was a vietnam vet, raised chickens for his own enjoyment, really wasn't interested in sharing them, really didn't import them through the proper channels following all of the import regulations, and finally, is probably dead by now, if not he is getting up there in years. Don't ask me for names or phone numbers, don't have them and wouldn't give them out if I did. But there were some in the US. They were not very cold hardy at all, and the ugly leg scale comes with age, so they don't start out looking as grotesque as the ones you see pictures of. It's probably only a matter of time until somebody imports some chickens that will pass for dong tao to a country that the US allows imports from, and then ships in percentage bred eggs, hatches and breeds in masse, and markets for $300 per day old chick. It has happened with many other cool foreign breeds. When it does happen, don't expect to see legs much thicker than what you can get on a Cornish, the purebreds wouldn't do it before about four years of age.
