I had bought quails, and there was disaster after disaster. One quail had an enormous hematoma on her foot, bigger than her head. We didn't realize it until we got home. her foot was swollen too. She couldn't walk from the pain. The hematoma ripped off on its own. She was flapping around, blood everywhere. Poor baby bled to death . Then we left to buy food. a baby was nearly crushed to death. nursed her back to health. Few weeks later she died because she was crushed again. SHe was the runt though- never grew at all, strangely, even after weeks. Something fishy about our seller :/. thEn, a quail was paralyzed and couldn't move her legs or chirp. I was asking for so much advice, but everybody said to cull her . Even I began to think about culling her. But my family did what it took. We built her a little box to help her stand. Never thought it would work. I was right. Didn't really do anything. Then, my sister had this random idea to give the quail electrolyte water. I never thought it would work. I was wrong. Within a day and a half, she was completely normal!!! I have no idea how it happened! She had water and food right in front of her the whole time she was with us. Plus, it seemed like brain damage; missing feathers on her head suggested she bonked her head at the top of her temporary net cage. and everybody was sitting on top of her. I never thought it would work. She couldn't even talk!! But after that water, she was completely healthy. walking, talking, and doing the things that quails should do It was a miracle. Never give up on your sick animals. Maybe the answer is right under your nose

What do you think happened? Why do you think she got better? I'd really like to know, tell me your thoughts!

It sounds like this one may have been suffering from malnutrition. What do you feed them? If one was suffering, the others are likely malnourished too; they just might not be showing the signs as much.

We feed them game bird food. it was from tractor supply. they also had water. they were able to easily access this at all time. also the others were so active lol they always got out of their coop so we ended up putting the net on top (net was metal) soon after we put the net we found her 'paralyzed'

I think there’s a good chance it had to do with nutrition, especially considering the other chick that didn’t grow, but it could also have been a head injury, and the electrolyte was coincidental. Often with a head injury you’ll see severe symptoms at first, but as the swelling goes down they will rapidly improve. The chick with a foot injury could have had bumble foot, Ive seen birds lose a lot of blood and not die from it, but if the bird was weak from poor nutrition or from not being able to walk to the food, the body might not have been strong enough to get thru it. I’m not sure how old they are or were when you got them, but even if what they are eating now is good, if the person who had them before was feeding them and the parents poorly, you can see effects from this for quite some time.

Do you have the nutrition information from the bag? The TSC in my town carries a "game bird" food that is completely inadequate for quail.

She said the guy who gave the quails to her was not really a good quail carer. I think it was the guy who did not care for the quails fault for the large bump on it's leg.

i thought it was bumble foot too, but it wasn't... with bumble foot there should be some sort of mark where the object penetrated the skin. there was no mark, just swelling. not even the slightest doubt of a mark either. just... swelling. also holy cow that foot was BURNING HOT oh my god it was like it was in fire for a few minutes or something it was that one foot that was burning hot and the other was a normal temperature it was so weird

Mycoplasma synoviae, characterized by swelling of the foot and hock joints, hot to the touch and may show signs of hurting when touched.
If I where you, I'd administer Tylan to the rest of your birds, as MS is contagious/infectious.

:0 oh my gosh i think ur right thank you so much! I've always wondered what happened to the poor girl. it's been maybe a month or two since she died- do you think that the chickens/quails are fine? Also on the joint, it wasn't exactly swelling- basically looks like a mound of dried blood that's the size of her head. then that pried off on it's own and it left a vile looking hole on her foot and she bled uncontrollably, flapping in pain. i felt so bad for her, and the sight sickened me. what do you think that mound is? but MS was spot on for her foot- i looked at images and her foot looks exactly like that. so basically two questions- do i still have to administer Tylan (quail had died maybe a month or two ago) and what is the lump? the one i described as the dried blood.


p.s. someone suggested it could be a hematoma idk though didnt seem like it
