Don't know nothin bout no chickens but I wanna

If eggs are what your looking for (as in eating and selling to your friends) then I would go with the redstar/blackstar (sexlink) chickens. They are very nice and friendly and lay every day just missing one maybe every fifth day. Mine is two years old and she STILL lays every day. Some of the others mentioned are very nice and friendly but don't lay well at all. Orpingtons are a great starter bird too but don't lay as well as the sexlinked chickens.

Good luck finding your crew and a big hello and welcome from Central WI

I am ordering a bunch of chickens from Either Mcmurray or Meyers hatchery so if you want to order some and don't want 25 you can go in on my order. Will be delivered around March 16-19th.

Welcome to the community. I'm from East Central Indiana. My suggestion would be to build your coop for more chickens than you want to start out with then grow into it. If your coop will hold 20 then start out with 10 or 12 then add as you go if you want. Also, you will have to determine what you want your chickens to do for you. I knew I wanted good brown egg layers that were hardy for the winter months. We decided on Plymouth Barr Rocks. You will have to research the breeds to find what you want. MY PET CHICKEN has a good breed selector program on their site that I used. We started with 12. Since then I've added some Black Sex Links, one black astrolorp, and one buff orpington. The black sex links seem to be the more proficient layers, but the Plymouth Barr Rocks are giving us some good Jumbo eggs.

Hello John and welcome!

It warn't that long ago I didn't know nothin' 'bout no chickens either. I spent many, many sleepless nights all over the internets and learnt as much as I could.

I've lost some peeps along the way, but I still have some peeps that've been with me since Day 1 and now I'm building up my third flock.

You may, or may not, find anything useful on my blog below.

Welcome, and build big!

First off, Take the number of chickens you think you're wanting, and double it!!! We were to have 6...less than a year later we have 28 and 2 turkeys!!

Thanks to all, so many kind words and welcoming ideas. It's just great! Knowing my personality (more is better!), I've already prepared my wife for a setup that's going to give us room to grow...

I've got lots of good reading to do but thank you to all, this post alone is filled with great informaiton. As I start working on this I'll keep you all updated.

This is our second year having chickens. We have several different breeds. My favorite is my Australorp girls, they are the best!

I found BYC googling around one day trying to learn all I could before we got our chicks.

I've been married 8 yrs and I have 2 kids. They love chickens too!

I'm currently a stay at home mom, the place I worked for more than 10 years thought China Needed my job more than me!

I love to travel. I take the kids on Spring Break vacations to places that I can sneak in Educational stuff. This year We're going back to D.C. They've just reopened the Pentagon tours back up to the public, so we're going there, again...

You'll really love this site! There is so much Info, and EVERYONE here is super nice and helpful!

See you Around!

~Wendy
