I have a 13 month old Ancona hen who has been sick for almost two weeks. Her comb is pale and flopped over, she is puffed up and isolating herself. I put Corid in the only source of water for 7 days and saw zero improvement. I put Nutridrench in the water and nothing. I now have electrolytes and probiotics in the water. None of my other 13 hens are showing any signs of this. She does not appear to have respiratory distress at all. Her crop empties at night. She eats. I will offer her scrambled egg and she is eager to participate. Today she seemed unsteady of her feet and was laying down. She stood up but her wings were droopy, hanging down. She is normally skittish but we could pick her up easily. I gave her straight Corid in her beak. What else can I do?? I have a picture of what I believe to be her poop.

What's her diet? Has she ever been wormed?

She is fed Scratch and Peck crumbles and fermented S&P whole grains. I make fodder a couple times a week with S&P sprouting barley. Water changed daily. They do not free range as we have many predators. I have not wormed them.

When's the last time she laid an egg? Any abdominal swelling? Comparing to a healthy hen makes it easier to tell. Do you provide a source of calcium?

Cut out the whole grains, it's actually not good for them to have very often. Also reduce the amount of fodder. Anything that can dilute the nutrition of their feed should be kept at minimum .

I provide oyster shell at all times. I am guessing it has been since she got sick. We have 6 white egg layers and I haven’t gotten 6 in quite awhile.

She looks very sick with her wings hanging down. Can you offer some water with electrolytes or give a bit of Poultry NutriDrench to her orally? Does she normally lay eggs? Have you found any soft shell or broken eggs recently? How hot it is where she is? Is the coop and run area shaded? She may be dehydrated. If she is hot, standing her in a shallow pan of cool (not ice cold) water would be good. I would offer some scrambled egg and a little wet chicken feed. I personally don’t like scratch and peck type feeds, because they are not homogenous, and the birds may pick out the parts they find more tasty. Vitamin and mineral deficiencies may occur. Instead, a good brand of layer pellets or crumbles would have every bite the same, so they don’t take the good parts. I would also provide free chipotle crushed oyster shell and grit in separate containers than their feed. Feel of her crop and let us know if it is empty, full, hard, doughy, or puffy/soft.
