It's okay. We did the best we could for her. She was still just a little thing. About 8 weeks old. She liked to be snuggled against my chest so I put a wash cloth over her to keep her warm and comfortable. Tube fed her and gave her water with just electrolytes (no vitamins) She seemed to drink okay, but I still gave her tiny bits so her kidneys wouldn't be flooded. She was my daughter's new chick, so we kept watch over her, and I usually sat with her in the bathroom, and talked to her. And she'd try to hop into my lap to snuggle. She went downhill very quickly, which was sad because she really was doing so much better after starting the sulmet. The night we took her to the emergency vet, she was weak and face planted in her food and water. :-(. I pulled her up, cleaned her face. She started the sulmet. The next morning she was much stronger. We took her in to the regular vet. He thought she'd be fine. Poop was looking firm again. The next morning came around and she was questionnable again, couldn't keep her balance. we (me and the vet) thought she might have been dehydrated from the very hot temps, so we added electrolytes and watched her carefully. Making sure she got food and water every 20-30 minutes. I was very careful about how much water, and gave her single drops so she wouldn't aspirate it. the next morning, worse again, her breathing didn't sound great, and she sneezed a few times. So I called the vet and they gave us an additional antibiotic. Sadly, she passed early the next morning. I think it was the face dunk in her water that did her in. Poor little thing.I'm sure there are prescription only versions, but all that people need to know is the proper amount to give for what they're treating, so you could have used the OTC version instead. Sulmet is Sulmet is Sulmet, just need to know the proper mg/kg, make sense? Many bacteria are resistant to Sulfa based antibiotics, which is why I have Clavamox and Baytril. The liquid Sulmet is 12.5mg/ml, but I have no idea how many mg/kg one should give for various infections.
When possible, one should have their vet do culture and sensitivity testing to ensure the correct antibiotic is used.
Sorry you lost your hen, but I have to ask, did you provide supportive care for her? Specifically, tube feeding? Chickens don't normally die from respiratory infections, but they do die from dehydration and starvation.
