Hi RedJungleFowl. I am sorry but it sounds like your chicken PROBABLY has "coccidiosis". It is very contageous and also deadly. If possible take a feces sample to your vet to be sure. Then your chickens should be put on the medicine Corid if it is coccidiosis. Good luck.

Agreed, it sounds like cocci, there are many very informative threads on this site, just type in coccocidiosis in the search bar at the top of the page. There are also pics of bloody poop for you to compare. Start researching!!!!!

I finally found some scientific information about coccidiosis. I hope this will help you! But you do need to give all the chickens Corid if that is what they have, which it does sound like they do. Good luck to you.

Other things I recommend is ALWAYS put one tablespoon of natural unpasteurized apple cider vinegar (with "mother" in it, Bragg's brand) per gallon of drinking water. Consider feeding them fermented feed. Pay close attention to SPACE requirements and keep SANITATION in check. Hope that helps.

Coccidiosis(Eimeria) is a parasitic infection of the intestinal tract, spread by droppings which get into feed/water via droppings. Most birds have some cocci in their sml intestines, only becomes a problem if they have an overload, then we medicate to bring it back under control. Very common for chicks/older chickens to have an overload. Some symptoms are runny/watery poop(may or may not contain blood, depends on what strain of cocci it is,9 strains in total)fluffed feathers, lethargic, weight loss, not eating/drinking properly. If symptoms match purchase Corid(amprolium)dose for Corid 20% powder is 1/2 tsp per gallon of water. Dose for Corid 9.6% liquid is 2 tsp per gallon of water. Treat ALL chickens for 5 days,do not give vitamins during treatment(interferes with medication)give vitamins after treatment. Cocci can kill very fast. Treating for Coccidiosis will not harm chickens, but not treating(if they have cocci)will probably result in deaths. No natural cure, cocci medication works by blocking thiamin intake in the body, cocci needs thiamin to reproduce, medication stops reproduction bringing parasite back under control.

Very good info. All I would add is that there are numerous ways for birds to get coccidiosis.
