Cleaning out one of our barn pens the other day, I picked up a heated water base unit, and uncovered a whole family of mice--big ones (daddy, mommy?), medium little ones (all the kids?)..and the bunch scattered like fireworks. Some dived into tunnels, some darted off across the top of the pine shavings, but no hens took chase, and the barn cats weren't around. Yes, I jumped! Another day I opened the lid of a garbage bin full of BOSS and found a tiny curled up field mouse, the little brown and white Disney mice. I guess he'd had his fill of sunflower seeds but had no water:( I'm find mice in the winter grasses around our pond, everywhere I go, it seems, and I really don't like finding them. Our barn cats can't seem to keep up with the mouse explosion this year since we've gotten the chickens. I'd like to know a safe and humane extermination method that wouldn't put our hens, dogs, and cats at risk. ~G

My neighbors cats get worms all the time form eating mice and other things they catch. My chickens caught a mouse a couple weeks ago and I think just about everyone had a bite of it. It was so gross. Can the girls get worms from eating mice?

It was under the heated water dish! Dh saw it this morning and stomped the hole full of shavings..hopefully that was enuff of an eviction notice! I watched mine hens devour a mouse last summer! I also just acquired a stray cat that leaves graveyards on my back porch right in front of the door! It had two big ones and a bunch of 1/2 little ones the other day! I need to worm that cat! I am not sure about chickens?

I don't mind mice so much. But when moving a stack of firewood, when I got to the bottom, there was a nest of rats. They jumped straight up in the air in my face, and scared the geewilders out of me. I hate rats!
