I learnt that during my studies for my food science degree.

But, what caught my attention more was the fact that you used the word 'sweets'! I thought it was all candy over there..?
Or are you just trying to be nice and talk in my local dialect so I understand?
Sweets is sweet things. Candy is more of a subcategory of sweets that includes things such as lollipops, smarties, etc

I assume you call candy the same as everyone does in Scotland, in which case

lollies = candy.
 
My grandmother lives in Ireland and I'm part Irish. Been there once, also went to London, Germany, the Czech republic and mexico. Lived in Bulgaria for a little while. I use American terms but when talking to people from Europe I usually use their terms, I guess it's just super ingrained in my brain.
