Hello, my name is carol and I four sebastopol juvenile geese. I have been reading some of the other threads about giving niacin and brewers yeast for leg problems which my goose is having. I have dog brewers yeast with garlic and niacin 500mg for people. Are those what I would give her and if so, what would the dosage be. Also should I give it to all four of the on a regular basis? Thank you in advance

When one of my goslings developed a deficiency a couple weeks ago (she got super wobbly and then didn't walk for four days), I started pouring the contents from two niacin capsules into their gallon-sized waterer. I give that to all six of my babies, even though it was just one that apparently had the deficiency. Hasn't seemed to affect the others at all...

As for the Brewer's Yeast, I guessed and had my husband crush up two tablets which I sprinkled on the top of their food - but that only lasted the first day. I wasn't a fan of the BY on the food because they tump it over and I just wasn't sure that the sick one was getting anything. I figured it was a pretty sure thing just adding the niacin to the water...

Now that they've started grazing more, I've cut down the niacin in the water some, but I'm still going with two tablets per gallon.

Have you noticed an improvement yet? I seem to be afraid of medicating my animals any more. I don't know why. Always afraid to give them too much and make it worse. Thank you. very much.

I absolutely saw an improvement! Very quickly actually.

Day 1 of medicine (keep in mind that that was her 4th day not walking) she didn't try to get up any.

Day 2 of medicine (by that point water medicine only), we hobbled her using white medical tape (the kind that sticks to itself, but nothing else). At first, she didn't try to get up in her own (I assume she was used to just laying down by that point), so I used a small rope that I slipped under her wings and used to lift her a little - just so she could she that I wanted her to get up. She didn't like that at all...

Next day I noticed she was trying to stand - but mostly did a lot of falling on her face - pitiful to watch.

Next day she was walking and following the others around. She looked so funny walking with the hobble on. Very penguin-esque - but it worked.

I left the hobble on for another couple days, just for good measure.

So, within about 5-6 days she was back to 100%. I was SO surprised (and pleased) by how great it worked. When I brought the niacin home, it was just as a last chance thing for her. I had already started to resign myself that we would most likely have to put her down...

And I was anxious about giving it to the others that weren't showing any problems, but I figured that - being a vitamin - their bodies would act similarly to humans getting too much of a certain vitamin and would just flush out the excess. Really and truly, the other 5 never acted any different, good or bad, by drinking the niacin. Think of it as Flintstone kid vitamins, but for geese babies! I would try it if I were you...

I am so glad for you that your goose is doing so well and that also gives me confidence. Some thing that I have also noticed that has me perplexed. My geese only want to eat when I am with them. They lay at the point that they see me coming and going and then when I come to see how they are doing they get up and eat like crazy. I I have been letting them in the yard hoping they would eat some of the non-mowed grass areas. Nope, they just lay by the gate. Is this typical?

I wish I could give you more info on that one, but my 6 little one month old babies are my first experience owning geese! I will say that I've noticed that mine will seem to quiet down and nap when I'm out of sight but then perk up and get quite active again when I come around to check them. Since I have little kids, I would make another comparison between the geese babies and a kid that likes to show out for mom and dad. "Hey! Look what I can do!"

I've taken ours down to the pond a couple times now so they can play and swim and get clean and all that, but unless I'm standing there cheering them on they show no interest in the water. They'd rather follow me back to the house. What the heck is that about?

Aren't they funny?

I have two about 6 weeks. I just started the brewers yeast to help prevent any problems. I mix 3 tablespoons in some plain yogurt and feed it to them that way. I am going to to it 2x a week. So far my two are doing great. I hope your turns around.

Yes they are so funny If I had known how much I like them I might not have had dogs.LOL. I got the niacin and put it in their water. My little girl is by herself tonight but she can see the others so she is OK with that. We will see how it goes. Fingers crossed. Thank you and I will keep you posted.

Thank you, I sure hope so too. Right now I have the brewers yeast in tablet form for dogs. When I find the powder I will get that and give it to them. I don't tink they will eat yogurt but I can give it a try. I tried to get them to eat moistened rabbit pellets but they turned their beaks up at it. Thank you for your reply

What type niacin did you give? This is all I’ve been able to find and trying to determine class
