Dose anyone else feel this way?

they'reHISchickens :

It's the migration season so you may be noticing more hawks flying south

Flying south and circling are two different behaviors. Circling is a behavior of a vulture, not a hawk. What the OP saw were vultures and vultures pose no threat to any chickens......unless it's already dead that is.

I love birds, and used to especially love the big birds.

But, I feel like one of my ducks lately. I watch everything that flies over the place sideways, anxious and alert to every big bird. (Usually crows at my house, and I don't worry about them - that much.

Today I realized I have achieved a new low.
On my way home from work, as I drove by the State Park about 1/4 mile from me, I saw a VERY large hawk.
Dead on the side of the road. As if he had just been hit moments ago.
I... uh, this is awful ... actually thought, "Ha, don't have to worry about YOU anymore!".

I felt terribly guilty for a second. Then I said to myself, I should admit I thought that on BYC. Someone there will understand.

Thanks for saving me the trouble of starting a new thread.

Thank god they were vultures . Thank you everyone. I'am sorry that the hawk attacked your poor baby. I'am sorry that yours was killed. One time I had a chicken of my lifted over the fence and then droped back down on the other side, I think the hawk hit an tree. she lived. I love and admire birds of prey they look so cool and noble. I also know that my pen is not verry secure I wish it was but its what I can do for now. Its good to know that I'am not alone

You do know that buzzards/vultures are no threat to your birds, right? They're nature's clean up crew and only eat dead animals.

Actually I have personally seen broad-winged hawks riding air currents some in a circular type pattern as well. They do this to ease their long migration down to the tropics. Can you believe some of them actually travel all the way down to Ecuador for the winter. Who would have thought it. They just had a special on the local NH TV station last night about it.
I would imagine if they are that high up on the thermals your chickens would be save. I have read others post on here about hawks trying to strike while people were standing with their chickens. One women's thread I read on here stated she could feel the draft from the hawks wings as he went past her. I quess you just never know!

Yeah, i was the same way with coyotes. B.C., i was excited to see wildlife in my yard, it was so neat to see them chase mice under the apple trees, A.C., I am worried and fretting about my girls out there with just hardware cloth between them and the world!

The sad thing is most wildlife finds chickens tasty too.

Vultures do attack live prey. Seen it happen here..and many others on this site have said the same thing.
