How do I tell if my chicks have cocci? I have lost two out of 15 so far. They hatched on the 15th or 16th, the feed store got them on the 17th, I picked them up on the 18th.

One was very weak the first day and died the first night we had them. One of my EEs looked fine yesterday but was looking weak today. I had cleaned its vent twice, though it didn't seem to be terribly pasted, I just wanted to make sure. I went out to run some errands and picked up some poly-vi-sol to give to it, but by the time I got back, it had died.

None of the others seem to be sick in any way. but I am wondering if I should put some vitamins in their water just in case. Can I do that and if I have a quart waterer, how much poly-vi-sol should I put in?

I don't know why the two died but I am wondering if maybe they had cocci. How do I tell if the other chicks have it. I haven't noticed anything odd with their poop that wasn't something my other birds had when they were chicks. I have seen an occasional brown foamy poop, but then I will see the same bird have a totally normal looking poop, so I don't know if I should be concerned about it. What should I be looking for? Thanks so much for any advice!

Perhaps I should have put this in Emergencies / Diseases / Injuries and Cures. Could a mod move this if it seems appropriate please?

Anyone? Maybe I just wrote too much for people to want to read. All I really want to know is:

Can I put poly-vi-sol in a quart waterer for my chicks, and if so, how much?

What are the symptoms of cocci and what is the treatment?

Thanks!

Yes you can put Poly vi sol in the water....even better you can purchase Poultry Vitamin powder at the feed store...it is usually a yellow powder. I think Cocci is premature at this point...but you could get a fecal sample and take it to any vet and they can tell you if they have cocci. Usually Cocci is associated with bloody stools.
Some chicks are 'failure' to thrive...meaning there was something wrong in the first place. Try not to feel so bad about it...it was out of your control. BUT definitely watch the others and if any more are looking weak/bloody stools etc you can purchase Sulmet at the feed store and follow the dosing directions on the package. They are young now so you do not have to worry about the egg withdrawal at this time...

Do not confuse bloody stools with Cecal Poo which is completely natural runny poop and comes every few days or so. Blood is unmistakable...when you see it.

Hope they are better soon!!

Not quite sure on dosing for Polyvisol...but I would think 1 part polyvisol and 3 parts water would be fine....to start. I generally use only poultry vitamin powder....maybe someone else will post.

Thanks! Any idea on how much poly I should put in a quart? I can't get to the feed store until day after tomorrow to get anything else, so I think I will just use the poly for now. I really appreciate the response.

*I was typing when your second post went up about the dosage. Thanks!
