Dotted White - Coturnix japanica

No, I won't be buying any more feed or seed or anything from them.

I buy probably 250# a week. I quess that isn't important to him. He never ordered my feed. What I got was for the new breeder that was going to use 10 bags a week. 500#. Well guess what, he's short 100#. Hope he can feed his babies something. He'll sure be surprised how much more they are going to eat when he goes with another feed that can get him faster.

I think I know what that new breeder is doing. He's trying to go cheaper.

Remember, my babies eat constantly right now because he didn't get me what I ordered. Well, I really like the alternate feed from somewhere else for the chicken chicks, so hoping the quail babies will to. I'll be changing them over tomorrow. Or maybe I should give them the 100# (which is not what I ordered) I got today and do the final switch.

I am not going to stop raising quail, I need their meat for my table. If I can get other varieties, I will. But after tonight I probably won't be on this section.

You shouldn't give up the section, any information is helpful. You raise the birds for meat, right? Many of us raise them for their colors and eggs. I sell the different varieties in hatching eggs, for example, not just the Jumbo browns. The forum is here for people to get information and share information, help others, etc...Everyone has their days, and I know how frustrating it is when you can't get the proper feed (I had an hour argument with my feedstore why I didn't order a feed that they said I did...it was medicated...and as you know I am not feeding my birds medicated feed due to research and publications)...

No, I may still decide to breed and if I do, there will be some changes out back to the quail area. I will need to close it in, right now it is partly open and can be seen from the road. Kind of. Anyway, that is a project that I will keep secret for a few years.

All of my pens are paddlocked for a reason. Chicken, duck and quail. Any noises at night, I go out with a riffle, never know what I'll find. Wouldn't want it to come to that.

By the way My Dilema is doing great. She's the one that Sumo sat on and tried to stomp into the bottom of the tub. She is also the one that got knocked down and was covered in Poo and all wet. I washed her with warm water and toweled her. Because JJMR had said blow dryer didn't work for his baby, I knew not to use it. I put her back in the incubator and dried her off. Sacrificing the rest of the hatch. But she is real cute and will be a breeder but not with the big guys.

Edited to add: I have deleted all my pictures in case I decide to breed. Turns out the three from my hatch are not M Golds.

To late, I already did share them, I just cleared out my upload file. I really don't want to breed them. I just want some meat birds to raise for the table.

Breeding takes time and planning, when things don't work out or go wrong, then a change and a new set of plans. That is what I really need to get away from. I am supposed to be cutting back, not expanding.

That was another reason to go with the quail. More quail, fewer chickens, less planning and work. I probably will only keep raising birds for meat for a few more years at any rate. Those 50# bags of feed are getting heavy.

No, I started looking for another source of meat and studying on Coturnix quail more than 4 years ago, years before I even saw my first one. And those little white speckled ones were some of the first I saw. Got me really curious then, because at that time I thought they were only brown.

I'll calm down probably in a few weeks. At an rate once this hatch grows out. They are the ones that suffer. They get set back each time I change their food. But I couldn't resist. When I saw it wasn't what I ordered I knew he ordered for someone else. I bought the two bags that I went in there for, then he told me about the new breeder that he ordered 20 bags for.

Actually, I may not even give it to them and just change them out once instead of twice. The ducks will eat it. Right now I'm so mad, if tomorrow was trash day, that is where it would go, today was trash day though.

i dont hink english "golden italian" are the same as your "golden" as the genes here are not lethal also are your fawn the same as ours in the fact that bred with normal japs they create auto sexing chicks?

I just lost a whole page of message I wrote. So Ill try again.

Shellyd - no it is definately not the Mexican Speckled Bobwhite, not a Bobwhite at all. I;m talking Coturnix, j. just don;t think its common so probably doesn't have a common name, yet.

They called the bird a Mexican White Speckled or Mexican Speckled White. It was definately a Coturnix j.. It looked like the description for the Dotted White, so that's what I'll refer to it as. Because I know they have used that in at least 2 studies that I know of. Maybe it is known as the Mexican Speckled white elsewhere.

These birds are international, are studied internationally and we need to think that way. They are in outer space being breed on the station. So they are definately international, outerspace birds. Wow wonder if they'll go intergalactic. Cool.

Back on track: They also had Tibetans and Jumbo Browns. These birds were about the size of my Jumbo Browns when they are 4-5 weeks old. So the birds they were selling were probably 6 weeks old. They were beautiful, they were all the same in size, so were well bred or selected for size.

They are pure white but peppered with small black dots throughout their feathers, backs, etc. They were not marked like my Manchurian Golds that I now have. There were no splotches - no lines - no barring - no V's like on the Bobwhites. Just very small dots of black.

Very pretty, I will get some if I see them if someone else doesn't beat me to them again. But it may have to waite until Spring. Only time I have seen them. Then I will have eggs unless they sex them before selling them. Possible, happens with chickens all the time.

Auto sexing - Don't know a thing about it other than what I read. It talked about imperfect albino and cinnamons (pubmed.gov). Is imperfect albino the silvers?

Someone else is going to have to figure out the auto sexing. Another article talked about -X- getting Redheads(M) and Yellows (F) but I didn't figure out what they crossed and they were talking about 4 different varietes. I am not interested in autosexing my quail, so won't follow up on that. Just thought it was interesting. I don't think I kept anything on the 2nd article.

If you want info on red heads and yellows I can help you out on those. You can also look up, Manchurian Golden....that is the name they decided from the "yellows...yellow is an autosomal dominant gene from the pharaoh (the brown birds).
