Our 6 1/2 month old pullets are really getting down to business nowadays. So proud of them!! Our very first egg was a double yolker and we get those at least twice a week, if not three.

We made fish last night and I decided to crack open a VERY large egg one of the girls left us the day before to use for the batter.

Here's the egg before I cracked it.

Here's the egg after I cracked it. I was SO shocked. It was like getting three eggs in one!! If I'd known I'd dropped it in the bowl a little nicer so the yolks didn't break. We were so surprised.

How common are the double and triple yolker eggs? We are wanting to hatch some at some point, but I don't think we'll try any of the big ones. They are from LB's.

Just had to share!!

Wow!

You don't live on an ostrich farm do ya?

That's a big egg.

Double yolkers are pretty common, especially for beginning layers. Triples are special. I have had a few triple yolkers but not many.

LOL, nope and no waterfowl, turkey or emus either. I've been asked a few times if the pullet's still alive and in one piece after some of these big ones have been laid.

Prior to that big one, here's another from the week before. Double yolker but HUGE egg. My mom hard boils many of them and I need a pic of one after it's been boiled... think it would be neat.

It's hard to find new things to use for size comparison.

Do you you have supplementary lighting in your coop? If so how many hours of light (including daylight) are they getting?
I have heard that too much light will cause them to lay double and triple yolkers. One draw back is that extra large eggs can
injure a hen or cause egg binding. I have one hen that lays very large eggs. Single yolks, however. She's a big hen and seems okay with the size.
It could also be that young starters sometimes have unusual eggs until their system gets set up right.
P.S. OMG THAT's A huge egg.

mamabigbird.... Yes, they're HUGE eggs!! No supplemental light, just regular daylight when they're in or outside during the day. These are good sized girls and they don't seem to have any trouble after laying these super sized eggs, even as babies, but they are large fowl. In this last week or so, the really huge ones have tapered off some and while some are still larger than average, 2/3 a week, they seem to handle them fine, thankfully. Thanks for the reply! Have a great weekend and Happy Easter!!

My Red just started laying eggs about a month ago and they are mostly double yolks. She is a very large bird, at least I think she is. This is my first go around with chickens. I don't think I feed her too much. Maybe a few too many dried worms on occasion. I'll have to keep reading these forums to be sure. I can't get over the size of that egg! And I thought ours were big! YIKES!
Never seen such a thing!

I have buffs also and mine lay huge eggs I think it is the breed one layed a double then a triple and then a double you can tell its spring
