Hey, just registered to ask this question after several months of lurking...
Pretty new to chicken raising and have a mixed flock of pullets that are 19 weeks old and one roo.
Most haven't started laying yet, but my 2 sapphire gem sex links started to lay exceptionally early at only 15 weeks and have laid several dozen perfect eggs so far...
Had a couple of "rubber" shell less eggs on the coop floor over the past few weeks, but nothing too worrisome since my flock is so young and just started laying.
This morning I saw one pullet in the nesting box and a few minutes later she hopped down and there was a normal egg with a hard shell. In fact I ate it for breakfast!
Just now about 12 hours later when I went to lock them in their coop, i saw something dangling from her behind and then she squatted and popped out TWO shell less eggs at the same time?! The 2 rubber eggs were attached by a thin membrane like cord.
She seems ok physically. She's bright and active and has a good appetite.
I've been feeding 16% protein growers crumbles and 20% protein all flock pellets with supplemental crushed oyster shell on the side. Plus soaked alfalfa cubes and perennial peanut hay as well as fresh garden treats like tomatoes and zucchini.
The other sapphire gem is laying perfect eggs with normal hard shells.
I didn't think it was possible to lay more than one egg in 24 hours let alone three total?! Do shell less eggs count and what could've caused it?
Thanks so much for any information!

Found this thread from 2015 that sounds similar to what I asked about. Still would like to learn more if anyone has any ideas?

Hello, i have a 20 week old Delaware who has been laying for a few weeks. The past week she has layed a good normal egg. Shortly followed by 2 soft shelled eggs in the same day. Total of 3 eggs per day. Shes done this twice now. She gets pretty uncomfortable looking prior to dropping the soft eggs, which shes done out side of the nesting boxes each time. Once by the waterer and the other in the garage. Almost like theyve surprised her.

Heres a photo of the two soft eggs she layed this evening. After a good egg this afternoon.

Any ideas as to whats going on? Thank you!

I've see a shelled egg followed by a softy in four hours a few times, and some duck people have reported a shelled egg followed by several softies, so it can happen.

Do you think it's something to worry about or will she grow out of it?
She's my favorite pullet of course! The funniest, most sassy personality! The queen bee of the flock!

I was worried about switching to layers feed since 12 out of 14 pullets haven't started laying yet. Is it ok for the nonlaying girls & roo to eat layers? They are all 19 weeks old. Is offering supplemental free choice oyster shells not good enough? We also have sandy limerock soil and very mineral laden hard water.

Found another previous post that's similar to what I saw with my pullet.
My pullet is bright and active this morning with a good appetite and no signs of distress. Hopefully her system will normalize soon cuz I'm worried about egg peritonitis if it continues to happen.

I have a red sex link that's been laying for the past couple months....she laid a hard shell double yolker this morning and then dropped two soft shell eggs back to back in the evening out in the run as we watched. We only have two laying right now and got our normal two eggs this morning so we know she laid one. What could be causing this? Maybe because she's still young and it's her system? This is the second time this happened and I actually thought it was another pullet starting to lay until she was seen laying them.

Yes I do have a rooster & yes they do have free choice oyster shells available at all times in a separate dish. I know it's a fine line between the right amount and too little or too much calcium. I thought it best to leave it up to them to figure out what they need? If they need it, will they eat it?

Yes, if they need calcium they will eat oyster shells. What are you feeding them? I personally feed Flock Raiser (or something other All Flock if TSC is out of stock of the kind I like) from about 12 weeks to when they die. I think your bird is just having pullet glitches, as as long as she has access to oyster shell she should be fine.
