So sorry for your loss:hit
Deer are no friggin joke! A lot of friends have lost dogs to them (2 this year alone). What blows my mind is that they go over fences to do so. I live in a rural area and a lot of folks don’t even have fences. Coyotes don’t kill as often around here as deer do when it comes to pets. I just shake my head so weird.

Not just the bucks, though where I grew up, a farmer lost an entire herd of cattle to a bull elk. It got into the pasture, and just went on a rampage goring the guy's steers in the gut. Those that didn't die immediately had to be put down.

When my Aussie mix was a pup, about ten weeks old, I was out walking her and had a doe come at us. She was on one side of the road, I crossed to the other side to go by her. She looked at me, looked at my dog... pinned her ears back and charged us both. I grabbed a two-by-four off the side of the road and came around after her with it, she put on the brakes, backed off, and slunk away. A two-hundred-pound Muley doe is nothing to mess with, if you're not armed, and I've no doubt she'd have killed my pup. That doe wasn't protecting a fawn, either - wrong time of year. I've heard of several instances in which a deer will go after a small dog purely to kill it, not out of any perceived threat.
