i am new to doves and have one single and two pairs, all in separate cages. They will have a large aviary, once my shoulder issue resolves. But one pair of ringnecks i got from someone have started fighting. They are a pair and have gotten along well in the two weeks i've had them. They have a nest, but no egg laying. Just today, i saw what i assume to be the male trying to fight with what i assume to be the female. Not horribly vicious fighting, but wings up for protection, some attempted pecking. i separated them but wonder what the issue could be. i do know they could use more room, and perhaps that is the problem. Would appreciate any insight or advice.

That is a strong possibility they are both but not a guarantee.

I find it is best to watch your birds in a flock situation before trying to determine gender.

Even then mistakes are made!

They seemed to get along at first. One would go to the bottom of the cage, head down, wings fluttering. i assumed that was a female. Also, that one would sit in the nest the most, but then they both would sit in the nest. i keep trying to put them back together and they will be okay for a while. Then i hear wings flapping and go to find the one trying to jump on and peck the other one. i may need to keep them separate until i finish that aviary.

I have an owl pigeon and a ringneck dove. The dove is constantly on-the bottom of the cage head down wings sort of twitching.

are they the same age? male doves jump onto the back of the females to mate with usually evolves a lot of flapping. males will also do a mating dance to a female with lots of bowing and cooing, females some times can do this too though so it's not a reliable way of sexing the birds.

i ended up giving both to a friend, who had a friend with two female ring necks. When he came to get them, he checked their pelvic bone and said they were both males. Hopefully they are happy now that they each have a girlfriend. :)

i'm sure they will be happy now that they each have a girlfriend. I have 3 males who live together and they all get along well.. it think it depends a lot on the birds personality though and two of them are bothers.
