Just curious- how often do egg bound hens resolve on their own (or after some minimal TLC, extra food and water, Epsom bath, lubing vent)? Just want to get a feel for what I am getting into. TYIA!

A lot depends on the hen or if it is actually egg binding. What breed is she and how old is she? Sometimes they have a calcium deficiency so we usually suggest giving a human calcium citrate with vitamin D tablet orally to help increase muscle contraction. That is usually more effective than soaking. You can place her in a warm area or on a warm wet towel. Let us know if she lays the egg.

She is a 1.5 year old Cuckoo Bluebar Blue-Egger, I've soaked her in warm bath with magnesium x 2 and given her calcium with Vitamin D. I have her isolated and she has a bowl of water/feed in front of her, which she seems to be consuming. I'll ask the husband to pick up some lube on the way home (lol!). She only started displaying this yesterday, so I am hoping I caught it early, but I've never had an egg bound girl before and my impression is that it doesn't usually end well (?).

After 24 hours, you can give another calcium tablet. How long ago did she lay an egg? Has anyone passed any XL eggs or soft/abnormal eggshells recently? Is she pooping okay, and what does it look like?

She laid day before yesterday, no abnormal eggs that I've seen. She just pooped (really huge, soft, green/brown). She continues to eat, hoping she can keep her energy up. She doesn't look like she's particularly in distress, but not walking, tail looks like her vent is pulsating (on run camera).

If she is able to poop, then she is not egg bound. Is she able to stand up and walk some? Is she showing any feather loss or signs of beginning to molt, or any broody signs?

No,she keeps eating and pooping big soft brown poop. Another epsom bath and felt around her vent with lube (which kind of sucked my finger in, which was a new experience, but didn't see any egg crowning, just some poop. When I rotated my finger "around" /up and down it felt a little firm, but not hard like an egg ( I think-not sue what I should be feeling for). At the end of the day she was standing and cooing for her sisters, and she actually walked to the coop , up the ramp, and is on the perch agin tonight. Guess I'll just keep doing what I'm doing (soaks, calcium +vit D, soft food and water + isolation during the day?
